This brown area has grown a lot over the last few weeks. It started as a small 1x1 area of dead/dry grass. What can I do to fix this?

Spray with fungus control and something like Talstar or Triazicide for bugs.

Hard to tell the difference in brown patch and bugs from pics, although the large amounts of green grass left in the middle of those pics make me lean towards bugs more. Fungus tends to wipe out the whole area.

Look to see if any blades have been eaten on. If so, armyworms / sod webworms.

This is where to start. If you don’t see any grubs then spray for fungus control.

Take a close of picture of the blades. It isn't grubs-it wold be dead, chinch bugs-it would be dead, brown patch-still greenish in the middle, it isn't army worms or sod webworms-you said a few weeks and army worms or sod web worms would have destroyed your whole lawn in a few weeks. It is either grey leaf spot or stunted growth from herbicide application.

Chinch bugs will leave green spots in the middle.

OP, did you apply some sort of weed and feed?

Look at that upper edge by the sidewalk. Look like good green grass about like a row of sod laid.

Chinch bugs eat indiscriminately. The wouldn't purposefully leave a green spot in the middle. Irregular borders leaving dead grass in their path. While not great looking there is too much green to be chinch bugs.

Yeah the green grass that you see is fresh sod. We had new beds put in and new sod was laid around the outside. The brown patches showed up right after the new sod got laid. I think it may be bugs, I’ll get a picture tomorrow.

I’m assuming this is bugs? I’ll pick up some spray today. Is it best to treat the entire yard or only the spots affected?

My lawn was great then started seeing exactly what your pics show. Put down Talstar and have gotten several rains and have been watering and it’s recovering. Started seeing the moths so I assumed sod web worms.

You’ve got something eating the blades and if it’s army worms they have not been there that long. You said it’s been a couple weeks and army worms would have erased your lawn by now.

You do have grey leaf spot and that is causing a lot of discoloration and lack of grown.

Head over to site one and get a bottle of Talstar or Wisdom and a bottle of propiconizole. You can mix them in the same backpack.

If you have something like chinch bugs, sod webworms, or army worms I would use liquid Talstar. That way they are dead on contact.

If you don’t have grey leaf spot and it’s been 30-45 days since you fertilized you can do that again.

Good video on the monster worms... Link to his website in the description. He recommends Anderson’s Duocide, which is what I use. Contains bifen in it as well, which is essentially Talstar.

I am having a similar issue with the St. Aug in my back yard. I initially thought it was fungus so I treated with a granular application. Although I saw some improvement, it wasnt much. I then noticed the chewed blades so I sprayed with Talstar 2 days ago. I noticed a ton of moths during that application, so I think I have a combination of a fungus and sodworms.

My question is, how often can I apply the Talstar and the fungicide? Should I do anything to help the grass grow in the places that had the damage?

Thanks for the help in advance!

Don’t over apply fungicide and rotate fungicides so the disease doesn’t become resistant. Typically you can do a follow up fungicide application 21 days apart. Which fungicide did you buy?

Talstar you can use as needed. It won’t hurt the grass.

I used the granular form of Scott's Fungus Control. I originally thought my issue was brown patch.

Scott’s DiseaseX? That azoxystrobin. Good stuff. If you had grey leaf one app of that is usually enough.
