Girlfriend bought a troy-bilt tb200 self propelled mower 2 years ago. She used it for the first year then it sat up last season while she had someone cut the grass for her. Im trying to get it back running so i can sell it for her.

Cant get it to start. I drained old fuel, cleaned carburetor, new spark plug and still nothing. Any ideas on what it could be?

I’m assuming you put it all back together correctly. I bet if you put a new carb on it that it starts right up. New replacement carbs are cheap $25-30 bucks max. Cleaning a gummed up carb doesn’t always work. Of course, double check to make sure you have a spark from the plug. But a 2 year old unit, it’s not likely going to be a spark, air or compression issue.

Pull the plug out the head and pour gas on the end that goes in the head. Hurry up and reinstall it then pull start it. If you’re getting fire it’ll pop off.

Define "cleaned carburetor" for us...If you didn't take it off and do a thorough cleaning then that is the problem.

Was it exposed to moisture? Check for fire with the sparkplug out and grounded to the motor somewhere on metal. If not getting spark then you will probably need to take some of the cover off the top end of the motor to access the flywheel.

There could be rust on the surface of the flywheel and magneto that needs to be scuffed off with emery cloth or some sandpaper. I've had to do this with many motors over the years and especially ones that were laid up for long periods.

However, I'm betting it's the carb, especially if ethanol gas was used and it sat up with gas in the carb for all that time.

Did you clean out the bowl and float and check needle valve? Is gas getting into the carburetor? Is the spark plug wet?

Try starting it with ether and see if it starts. If it does, it probably isn't getting gas from the float. Pop off the hoses and make sure gas is flowing through the lines to the carburetor. It could be clogged up in the tank. That old gas gums up like molasses. Good luck.

My Troy-Bilt withe the Honda engine took a replacement carb for less than $20 and starts first pull every time. My Troy-Bilt with the Briggs took a thorough cleaning to get it running. I don't use it as often because it is self propelled but it starts on a few pulls. THOROUGH cleaning - take apart - clean- re-assemble.

Air fuel spark and proper timing it will run regardless.
So solve that your mower will run properly

Took carb off completely, disassembled carb from bowl, removed pin and and removed float, took the needle valve and jets apart, stuck fine wire in all small openings and ports and sprayed gumout carb cleaner everwhere i could. Resembled back the way i found it. I did that all even though none of it looked bad, wasn't any residue or gunk in it but gave it a try anyway.

Hmmm...If you have spark then it should at least hit.

A quick search shows that those seem to have carb issues. I found a few videos showing how to disassemble and clean those plastic carbs.

Check out the first video...It talks about a potential automatic choke issue that is easy to check.

Does it have the plastic carb on the Briggs? If so replace it. Ethanol gas ruins it. You can buy a cheap replacement on Amazon for 10 bucks, but those are shite too and you have to move some parts from the old carb. You can get a new Briggs carb from Amazon for 30 bucks. I know this because I just fixed mine. I wish I could find a metal replacement for that crap plastic carb. Find a gas station that sells ethanol free gas and use that in all your mowers and gardening equipment.

ETA: If you have a Troy Bilt mower with a Briggs and Stratton engine, and it has a black plastic carb, this is probably your carb: Replacement Briggs carb

I installed this one, after the crappy 10 dollar chinese version failed in one week. Mower starts on the first pull. Advise you also run the mower once a week, whether you use it to cut the grass or not. Just run it for 5 minutes.

Got any starter fluid? You should be able to get it to pop off using ether. If you keep hitting it with a few squirts, it will usually suck the blockage out of the carburetor.

you cleaned every port except for the main one that nobody ever cleans because they don't know it's there.
The main bolt you took off the bowl, the one in the center, has the main jet built into it and that's the jet that always clogs. Must clean the side holes and the center hole with a small strand of wire and carb cleaner.
