I don’t know much about electricity but I just flipped every breaker off in the panel and the light behind the button was still glowing. I need to switch this out but I don’t know how to kill the power before messing with it.

Was the breaker mislabeled maybe?

The doorbell as in the button you press?

I've changed them out many times with power on. If you short the wires the door bell will chime. You won't feel a thing unless you touch both wires to your tongue.

Jmarto1: I shut every one of them off and still on.

ItzMe: I read that but I’m always more trusting of actual people on TD than random internet articles. If this is my last post, everyone will blame you.

Disconnect wires on the chime.

Mine was hooked to a battery that was hooked to the old alarm system in the house we bought. I had the same issue.

Well I did it. As ItzMe said, I felt zero electricity.

Its low voltage anyway, probably 24v. You'd have felt it, but its not like 120V or anything.

It's low voltage. You'll be fine. Should be a 24 volt transformer somewhere, either in the top of a closet or in the attic.

Literally just did mine on Saturday.

Had the opposite issue, 22 years of exposure had gotten into the button interior and wires and connections had weathered/rusted.

Removed the old one, cleaned the copper wires leads with sandpaper, installed new doorbell button ($8 from Lowes)-- all good now.

And previous posters are right, it's a direct low voltage feed (and constant lead, thus the light is always on) you can mess with directly.

If it's an old bell, it gets power via a 24V transformer probably bolted to a junction box in the attic. The circuit that converts the 24v AC to DC must have a large capacitor of possibly a battery that keeps the light burning when power is cut.

If you want, throw breakers for attic lights and wait a while. No real electric hazard.

A few years ago, mine quit chiming, but the button was still lit up. Like you, I couldnt figure out how to cut off the power to it. It didn’t matter. I changed the button without even feeling a tingle. It’s low voltage.

A doorbell transformer is plugged into a socket way up in the ceiling of one of my closet. They Like to hide those things in out of the way places. Just installed a ring doorbell and didn't kill the power

I think they are only 9 or 12 volts.

I asked this same question to my electrician today when they were here. Wasn’t labeled on the panel.

He told me not to worry about since it’s low voltage. Will report back later if I get zapped.

Eh, it’s low voltage. In fact I changed one today with the power on.
