i need help with my moms house, it looks pathetic, the Azaleas and hydrangeas she has are average 4ft tall, old, and scraggly looking and half of them are dead after the freeze.
im going to clean out all the old stuff redo the beds and replant some more flowering bushes.
thing is, the old bushes seemed to do just fine with being out in direct sunlight 24/7 year round yet i see the stores saying this:
her list of what she wants is:
- no bigger than 24-36" tall full grown
- has to be red or pink flowers only
- needs minimal care to keep alive
- doesnt need to be trimmed more than once a year
- area being replanted is 2ft deep x 40ft long
so please tell me what bushes i should go with, should i plant them 1ft apart, 2ft apart, 3ft apart?
also whats the best way to prepare the ground for them to do best.
TIA

Azaleas and hydrangeas make a great combination in the landscape. They both love the same growing conditions of acidic, well draining soil, with lots of shade.

I have dwarf loropetalum that fits into that category. I planted in 2019 and it’s just now 3 foot tall. Perfect for me!

Have you cut into the branches to see if there is any green. You may have to cut the hydrangeas back to 6 inches above the ground but they should be ok. Same goes for the azaleas.
You should be able to cut them back until you find green, then apply fertilizer. It will take them a little bit to fill out, but they will grow back nicely!

thanks for all the help guys, i'll look into getting some Red Ruffle Azaleas or Encore Azaleas.
cam anyone tell me how far apart to space them? i will be getting the 1 gallon size so they have a good head start. i want her to have a good solid flowered hedge after it grows in.
also, im starting from assuming the dirt has used up most if not all nutrients it had, so how much dirt should i be digging up to remove?
is adding a few inches of potting soil on top enough, or should i remove more than that with digging out the old dirt?

The tag on the plant will tell you that. I have encore azaleas blooming twice a year. Boxwoods are nice. Drift roses come in many colors and can be trimmed & fertilized. I love agapanthus (lily). Sweet olives are nice and fragrant when blooming. I give my azaleas fertilome azalea food plus with systemic abilities.
