Thanks in advance for any suggestions or comments.

Been enjoying the luxury of have ice and cold water from our fridge door for the past 3 years. A few months ago the water started having flakes of translucent film floating around in the cup.

So far:
City water is still coming out clear. So it’s occurring somewhere within the fridge.
Tried changing the filter.
Tried drops of bleach in the filter in case it is something biological.
The particulates are not white or solid so I don’t think it’s a calcium build up.
Ordered a new water supply tank in case there is a algae growing in old tubes. Waiting on delivery and then installation.

Any insight or similar experiences/fixes?

change the water filter and then run about a gallon of water through it to flush all that crap out of the lines.

those floaties are algae growing in the water filter because you never replaced it often enough

Is this definitely coming from the water and not the ice? I had something similar happen and it turns out the floaties were small pieces of plastic that were coming from the cube mold on my ice maker. My fridge is much older than yours though and I wouldn’t think this would be happening at 3 years.

I’ll try again. But I’ve changed the filter pretty much every 6 months. Maybe I missed by a month or so. But never just ran with an old filter for a long time.

That happened to my fridge. The stuff came from the filter. I changed the filter according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, but that didn’t help. When the area of Ascension Parish where I live began to get water from Baton Rouge Water Co., the water quality improved dramatically. But, I still got floaties from the water dispenser occasionally. I figured that the water from Baton Rouge didn’t need to be filtered, so I removed the filter and ran the dispenser without a filter. That was more than 10 years ago and I have not seen any floaties since then. If your water supply is good, you don’t need to filter it. If you have bad water, it’s probably best to use filters and tolerate a few floaties now and then.

You probably need to clean the nozzle on the water dispenser. It will get some algae growth in it. You can take a long cotton swab or they make those brushes you clean metal straws with.

That’s a good idea. I cleaned the tip but didn’t really get inside of it

Changed the filter and ran about 4 gallons through it. Nothing changed.. maybe.. maybe there are fewer coming out but that might just be wishful thinking lol

Clean the nozzle, they get gunked up pretty easy.

not necessarily. The new Samsung fridges have a flap door that seals and when you dispense ice, flakes can stick on it. When it shuts it will melt and will keep standing water there. After a while standing water will grow mildew and when you get ice again, it will know some greenish black floateis.

I have started cleaning that flapper door area with bleach. Thinking about cutting a notch in the flapper door seal to allow that puddle to drain as well.

UPDATE:

Replaced the filter and ran 4-5 gallons through it. Still had floaties. So I was pretty sure it was something growing in the water lines itself.

Had a new cold water reservoir installed this morning. Basically, a bundle of coiled tubing that sits behind the crisper. Instantly, no more floaties! Very happy to able to get water from the fridge again.

Just a guess, but it's possibly the feed line being plastic instead of copper that runs to the fridge. Copper keeps most of the nasty stuff from growing in your incoming water lines.

Install an inline water filter before it enters the fridge. One in addition to the fridge filter. Like this one from Lowes that lasts up to 5 years.
