MSM Turf and spotted spurge

I’ve applied MSM turf about a week ago to areas with spotted spurge, but it seems to have grown more. Anyone have luck with MSM turf and spurge, or do I need another herbicide?

Did you add surfactant to the spray solution? Give it another week or 2 to show results. Metsulfuron Methyl is recommended for spotted surge control by the LSU AgCenter. Spotted Spurge

Yes, added surfactant. I’ll wait another week or so to see if there’s any progress.

Give it 2 weeks. You might need a second app, but it will kill it.

Speaking of surfactant, do you have any advice on when to use MSO vs the typical non-ionic surfactant?

Read the label of the herbicide and use what they state on the label; if they say use MSO, then use that and not non-ionic surfactant to obtain highest efficacy of the herbicide. Personally, the only herbicide I’ve used that specifically calls for methylated seed oil (MSO) is sethoxydim (Fertilome Over The Top Ii, Vantage, …..).
Chemical companies spend millions in laboratory & field research trials to produce labels that EPA has to approve before they can market the product. In other words, just about everything on the label will have been research based, including field trials, to provide highest efficacy and least negative environmental impact of the product.

I have two questions.
1) What is a surfactant?
2) Will this kill Virginian Buttonweed and spurge without killing my Bermuda?

Surfactant is basically a non-foaming detergent that helps the herbicide penetrate the leaves of the weeds you are targeting, particularly important for “waxy” leaf weeds. Often called spreader-sticker.
Yes MSM Turf is effective against VBW and labeled for use in Bermudagrass. It does require multiple applications during the year, often over several years, to effectively control VBW. No magic bullet, “patience & persistence”. There is always going to be some stress to the Bermudagrass, but it will recover, just be sure to not exceed the labeled application rate - read the instructions (label) on the bottle carefully.
Much greater success is achieved when sprayed as it emerges and is immature. When sprayed when mature (white flowers) people are often disappointed in the results and claim it doesn’t work.

I was researching the efficacy of my fusillade/recognition combo for Bermuda when I happened to read somewhere about the MSO. I had good luck with this combo(using non-ionic) at my last house, but it isn't fazing the Bermuda at my new place. I don't know if it's a different type of Bermuda causing the issue, but I now suspect it is. At any rate, I contemplated mixing my next batch with the MSO. I have some places I can experiment.

As a surfactant - Hi Yield Spreader-Sticker.
For control of VBW or spotted spurge.

Triad select kills it in a couple days on bermuda.
Will harm st aug and centipede.
Will be spraying a median strip in front of house today at dusk.
I think in my area spurge has taken a tolerance to celcius.
Go as light as possible on surfactant in this heat if you don't want yellowing of grass.
I typically won't use more than a 1/3 ounce in summer.
