I’ve got a Craftsman mower with a B&S engine. It’s about 11 years old. Cranks on first pull every time I get it out. If I have to stop mowing, for some reason, and go to restart a now hot or warm engine, it won’t start. Once it cools off again, it’ll start again on first pull. What’s going on?

So when this happens on an old car with a carb, it usually means the gas is boiling in the carb. I don’t know enough about small engines but that’s the symptom in a large engine

Could be a bunch of things but let's start with fuel. Non ethanol would be ideal but by chance are you running any of that E15 in there?

Coil/Magneto what ever B&S calls them. The wires expand and contract due to hot/cold. Over time they start shorting out during hot cycle. Use a business card to gap a new one.

I would also guess ignition. When the electronics heat up they stop working.

Auto-choke is your problem. The wax-pellet thermal device that operates your choke is sticking. Replacement kit is about $25.

Is that the choke thermostat?…..looks like a 4” sword stuck in a stack of nickels behind the muffler?

Yup, they fail and cause the exact issue you are having. I had a Troy-bilt lawnmower that had the same issue, lived with it for two seasons until replacing that part.

Clames, your diagnosis was spot-on. It was the choke thermostat. The new one, plus tax, was just a hair under $26. Thanks, buddy!
