My wife and I are thinking about getting a mosquito mist system for our backyard. We live in Shreveport and our backyard is somewhat wooded. Do any of you have mosquito systems? If so, are they worth it? I’m looking for the good bad and ugly.

I have the Mist Away System and we love it. Live in southern part of the state, below I-10 and they get pretty bad here.

Unit comes on twice a day about 15 seconds each. Have a fenced area behind the house for the dogs 80 x 20, but more property beyond the fence. If you walk out the fenced area you get attacked, go back inside and it's like an invisible screen. Worth every penny.

Runs about $75 a month for chemical. They talked me out of getting the top of the line model and went with the drum type. Got the complete support package, anything breaks they fix it, they come out and refill it.

There is the DIY option that reduces the price significantly.

Can't recommend it enough.

That’s exactly what I was looking for. Are there any downsides that I should be aware of? We have a lot of birds bees and butterflies in the yard. Does it do anything to deter them? We’d definitely like to avoid that.

None at all. We have dogs that stay inside at night and at least one outside all day. We only have to pick up the food and water bowl in the evening and after is sprays in the morning,

We also have birds and a Vitex tree that attracts many butterflys when in bloom, no problems at all the still come in to get the nectar.

I can't recall the chemical they use, but I have chairs and furniture under the pation and absolutely no residue.

You're welcome. Probably the only drawback is the drum on the patio, but it has a cover and it's tucked away in the corner and you never really notice it.

Good Luck!

How much is the initial cost on something like that?

I’ve gotten one quote so far and it was $2549 for 95 linear feet of. The refills with this particular company is $180.

Before you spend big money I would try the spartan mosquito eradicator. It’s a pack of two canisters you place in the yard around the perimeter. One pack controls an acre I believe, but if you haven’t used it before they recommend doubling up. I have 2 acres that get swampy with wooded areas around my property. We couldn’t go outside after dawn until I found this system. I installed it a few years ago and have no issues with mosquitos. I just change out the canisters in spring and summer.

Not worth it, the systems are expensive to maintain and clog often.

Just spray talstar yourself, it’s what all the commercial companies use and is the most effective

Have you had one in the past? Like I said I’m definitely looking for all the good, bad and ugly.

What rate do you use, and do you broadcast over the entire lawn

Talstar mix for mosquitoes is 1oz per gallon. Spray the underside of your trees and shrubs up to 10 feet. Also spray mulch, mondo grass, etc. you don’t have to spray your whole lawn.

Agree with everything fearneaux1 said. We also have the Mist away system and it works great.

You asked about any downsides. The only downside for us is that we had some nozzles that sprayed directly onto our back patio, and it made the aggregate surface somewhat sticky, which made it collect alot more dirt, and required more frequent pressure washing.

Eventually we disabled those nozzles, but still have good coverage due to proximity of other nozzles in nearby flower beds.

I have not, but had a franchise company for spraying and dealt with a lot of people who had them and stopped using them to do them breaking, being to expensive or just not working. They wanted to switch to a spray service because it was cheaper than the system.

I stopped running the franchise as well because it didn’t work, people will claim it works for them, but that’s simply because the pesticide element (talstar) killed them mosquitos around their house and they just didn’t come back for whatever reason.

All the barrier sprays are bs.

The misting systems are a giant waste of money when just getting a little pump sprayer and ordering talstar off amazon and spraying it on your fence, bricks etc a coupe times a year will yield the same results.

Mixing rate is on the label for talstar, 3 oz per gallon I believe, it’s been years since I had the company and did it.

This system works great. Last year could not sit outside, and so far this year not one mosquito. My yard is small enough that I only use one at a time.
