I got a new section of Tiftuf this year in a newly well-lit area and want to bring it down to an inch. Problem is that it is stuck at the second notch just over 1.5 inches. I mow almost every single day down to this level and it just grows too fast to go down a notch without scalping(or even being able to push the mower through it).
Should I just go lower anyway? I’m using a Fiskars stay sharp max manual reel and it is punishing. OK to mow 2nd notch in the morning, then lower in the afternoon?

The goal is to actually scalp it. You're going to have to find a way to get it down to an inch (or lower) just once, and then try to maintain at 1.25"

Absolutely. What ever you need to do. I've heard of people using a "weed eater" to scalp. It all works. Bermuda can take all kinds of abuse.

You might try renting a rotary that goes to .75 or borrowing one from a friend who doesn't care about his blades

I don't know how many SF of Bermuda you're talking about, but be prepared to have a shite-ton of clippings.

Luckily this section is just 1200 sqft or so. I was wrong though. I was only maintaining 2” the last few days. Vacation threw me off.
I got it knocked down to 1.5 and it’s only slightly scalped. That was a 33 gallon bag full of clippings just from what I swept up.
I guess I’ll go after that elusive 1” after a few more days.
I have a riding mower I use for cutting taller shaded areas and pulling implements, but I’m trying to make this area nice.

I just did the FIRST ever scalp of my 419 (1-year old) yesterday evening - roughly 7K SF of turf. I've been maintaining around roughly 1.5"-1.75" the past year cutting at least twice week.

I dropped it down to a little over 1" yesterday evening. Yeesh...I have (14) 42-gallon trash bags full of clippings. I'm planning on going to 3/4" today but hopefully I'll have a lot less clippings to bag.

I plan on core aerating and top dressing in the next few days so I wanted to get HOC down. I also just got a reel mower as I've been using a Honda rotary.

ETA: I had a lot of neighbors looking at me crazy during this process, wondering why the hell I was making my lush dark green 419 a big brown mess.

Is it too late to scalp my celebration? One big swath of my front yard is growing over centipede thatch. Can't really cut it lower than 2" without it looking sh*tty.

Got to scalp Bermuda down to the desired length. My son put down Bermuda 4 years ago and he goes HAM on it once a month. Looks great.

No. I see some online dominators scalp 2-3 times/year.
If it’s growing season, you can scalp it.

You can always scalp but multiple times is not needed. You can bring it down to the dirt.

Thanks. I'll do it once the yard dries.

When I plug it it's always impressive how deep the roots are.

Are you doing anything beside fert, water, and mow?
Aerate, Air-8, or RGS for example?

No. I aerated last year. There are no rental places within an hour drive so it's kind of a pain in the arse to do it. I normally use prodiamine but didn't this year since I was overseeding highlander bermuda in some areas. I spot treated with MSM and Dismiss but other than goosegrass and marsh parsley I didn't have many weeds.

Spring of last year my backyard was mostly dirt. I plugged bermuda and threw out some zoysia seed. I almost have a complete lawn this year. The bermuda is choking out the zoysia patches.

This will be every year. I wait until it’s dry (much lighter to haul). Make sure to wear a mask, or you’ll have black boogers for a week!

goosegrass
So I got this cheap weed puller... damn I love that thing. It's so satisfying pulling up a clump of goosegrass that you could barely see and then discovering just how much space it covered.

Got a link for it? I got tendonitis from pulling the damn stuff by hand

Super satisfying to rip up. I didn't have a problem with it last year since I used pre. I didn't think it'd come back as bad as it did this year. I started keeping dismiss mixed up and I hit it whenever I see it. Damages the grass around it pretty bad, though.

You bet! My timing must have been off on pre. That or I just suck at using it.

Look up “grandpa’s weeder”
I love this thing. Like last guy said, super satisfying. You pull up what you think is a small weed and you get a huge one.
Works best on goosegrass and crabgrass. Varying results on other weeds.
