There are chemicals in cinder blocks that leach into the soil. So if chemicals bother you, don't use cinder blocks. My raised bed is built out of 2x6 cedar boards and has lasted over 10 years. I did have a little rot at the corners of my bed and used metal flashing and scabbed on cedar to fix it. Took all of 30 minutes. If I were building from scratch, I would put the flashing at the corners, inside, and run it 18" each way. Though I'm sure the flashing leaches something into the soil.

The new ones are a heavy plastic, very similar to composite decking.
I can barely cut the stuff, I’m not too worried about leaching.
