the red/white boxes are where i have electrical outlets now. one by the pool pump and one on either side of the front porch.

the driveway is a problem; the obvious solution would be to go straight down the middle of the yard then branch left & right but i'm not tearing up my driveway to run wiring.

the arrows are where i want to install lights; 4 at the base of the driveway and 2 under the trees. i am not worried about lighting the flagpole or house because thats easy to do.

i can't fathom that when the house was built and that driveway was poured they didn't run wiring. even with the floodlights on at night old people tend to run off the driveway. in fact the floodlights make things worse because of the glare. solar lights suck and i'm tired of shitty solutions that stop working in 2 months

what exactly am i looking at here? lots of money? how deep do you have to trench to run outdoor wiring? i realize the space i never to cover is massive and spread out which doesn't help matters.

To bury the wire in the ground, you need something like this
LINK.

and use it like Youtube video

Your biggest issue will be digging under the driveway.

Once the wire is down, there are a ton of fixtures out there that easily install

yep. if i want lights on both sides of the driveway at each entrance i have to do this twice.

this is one of those projects i may never undertake unless some easy solution presents itself. i put some solar lights under those trees for a hot minute and they looked FANTASTIC but unfortuantely they don't get enough sun during the day and so by the third day they didn't come on at all.

low level lighting is the only way to proceed here i think but the driveway is a real problem.

The driveway is actually an easier solution than you may think. You have to run conduit, use a garden hose tunneler on the end of your PVC run:

Home Depot Walkway Tunnel Kit

What type of soil? This is probably the best and cheapest way but takes some digging

Wow! That video was amazing!

would happily pay a couple hundred for that tool considering how much time & money it would save over having someone come out and dig.

damn i learn something new every day on this board

i might give this a go! still have to figure out the driveway situation but this is half the battle.

thats a problem here; lots of natural rock formations underground. as you can see my house was built into the side of a hill. i may try that water/pvc trick.

eta i assume any solution using the culvert would be a bad idea? the culvert under the driveway is open but not sure how that would work.

Not the video shovel but the other one listed is less than $50 at home depot

Screw that hand edger, buy, borrow or steal an electric edger.I bought an electric edger for about $100.00 to bury 800’ wire for invisible fence for my dog..
Where your driveway meets the street,I guess you could rent a concrete saw to cut a trench and then fill it in with that black tar rope( forget what they call it),would look like an expansion joint.
Damn dog,the fence didn’t work. When she decided she wanted to leave the yard she would take off running, when the collar beeped she would “hunch” up and take the shock.
Then when she wanted back in she would sit at the edge of the yard and wait for me to come take the collar off so she could come back in.

sounds like my dog.

also, had a septic issue last spring. did i miss a golden (no pun intended) opportunity to push conduit when they had everything open to connect the new pvc?

note the massive boulder in the middle. lots of rock like that just below the surface.

That was the ideal time to do it, but you also know the soil is soft there and you can probably jet through it.

That is also an option, but you are going to use a lot of wire using the culverts only. If you could tunnel under in one location and then use the culverts on the last lights near the road, that would probably work.

Give it a shot. To do so is cheap and worth the try.

In my high school days I worked for a plumber.
He use to keep one of those rigged up and on the truck rack. I can remember using it several times successfully.
It just takes time and is slow but I can personally say it worked for us.

if i can get to the inside of my yard i can install 4 of the 6 lights i want. that just leaves the 'outside' brick facade at either end of the driveway at the bottom. maybe the answer is to jet under the driveway right there near the culvert so i wont have to dig as much of a trench. it wouldnt hurt anything to enlarge the ditch on either side of the driveway anyway.

hmm..thinking this through

Trenching at the culvert could lead to erosion from water intrusion in the future, especially if the water moving through there has any velocity during high water times.

So after further thought; a single trench through the driveway will allow me to me to branch the wiring (i assume this is fairly straightforward?) so one line runs down the hill to the outside facade (on the right) and the other would cut under the driveway and take care of the 2 trees and 2 internal facades.

that leaves only the outside facade on the left side as a problem. i don't know of another way to reach it except to go under the driveway on that side too.

In theory, yes, but you wouldn’t believe the amount of stuff they pour over that you will without a doubt hit. It’s definitely achievable but you will cuss.
