No idea what suddenly caused it. Just suddenly backed up. I've removed all the traps under the sink, ran a 20' snake and I've found a solid obstruction. I just can't get thru it. Put everything back and poured a full bottle of commercial drano gel. That was at 330. There's still some in the drain on each side.

Any ideas? Thoughts on how to fix it without paying a plumber?

UPDATE: plumber came, snake was going up the vent for him which is what must have been happening for me. He got it in about 35 minutes. Charged $100 total.

Tried a plunger? Or even one of those compressed air can type plunger. (Personally, hand plunger, old style)

You could rent a power drum snake like rotorooter uses at home Depot. You have to be careful with those things as the snake cable can kink very easily and then it starts flopping around and can hit you....and you don't want that. Also, how old is your house and is your sewer main pvc or the old clay tile or orangeburg?

Most likely a soft food that your snake just went through, but didn't push it on down.
I'd just pour the Drano like stuff in the drain, let it sit overnight, and try to snake again.
Be careful with the plunger if you've already poured Drano in, it generally can splash back up in your face and eyes.

So I let it sit overnight, undid the traps under the sink and let all the backed up Drano drain. Then ran the power snake again for about 30 minutes, very carefully feeling for any resistance. Going back and forth any time I felt a little bit of anything. Nothing felt like a clog at all. Put all the traps back. Poured 8 quarts of boiling hot water, clogged up both drains. So I drained all of that and have called a freaking plumber. I hate having to call somebody, but I've got to work and I'm at a loss.

what power snake? I had a clog in my main line from 3 girls using wet wipes in toilets. No more wet wipes in my house. The blockage was a complete blockage about 4' long. Was incredible all the stuff that mixed with those wet wipes. They were using the "flushable wipes" as well but didn't make a difference. I bought the rigid snake and connected my drill. The auger that came with it sucked major arse so i installed one of those bits that opens up.

Sometimes it just makes sense to hand over the problem to a pro. Let us know how it goes.

yeah but that little corkscrew bit that comes with it sucks. That's why I bought that Rigid claw bit.

See that's why I hate hiring somebody. I could've ordered that off Amazon had it here by tomorrow for way less than the plumber but the W was just tired of not being able to do dishes so I caved. Bet if I don't order one and have on hand for the future.

I've run into similar problems with my rental properties and its always been a collapsed sewer main. Always meaning 3 different properties with mysterious clogs that even a drum power snake wouldn't clear. One property even had a recently installed PVC main line but after digging we discovered they had left a 5' section of clay tile pipe from 1 unit connecting to the pvc. That clay had collapsed.

But everything in the house drains fine except this one kitchen sink, could that still be a main?

Fortunately for me I was able to put on hold a day or two to unclog the kitchen drain.
Perhaps the Drano you put never made it to the actual clog. Seems if you were able to pour that much water in before it backed up in the drain tells me that the clog is further away than your snake may be able to reach.

Do you have a link for that bit?

Depends on where the sink line hits the mainline in relation to everything else. If its "upstream" then the main could be clogged between the sink line and other tie-ins downstream. Also, have you checked your vent pipe for a clog? Its unlikely to clog but I have seen it happen.

Note, I did have to rig my cable to fit the bit. I cut the big coil end off and welded the cutter head to the coil. Sorry for any confusion.

I lived in a old house w/big overhanging oaks that usually produced a heavy acorn crop each year. My kitchen sink drained sloowwwly, and the dishwasher would back up into the sink. Finally called out the plumber....pipes were clean, but the vent pipe was blocked with oak crud. After plumber snaked it, everything drained like a charm.
