Without adding any AC units, etc.
What's the best way to keep a garage as cool as possible?

For informational purposes, my garage is attached, has living space above, and below, has 3 windows, and is a 3 car space.

I'll leave one window open all the time (no risk of breaking and entering through that window) and sometimes will open the other windows and put a box fan in during the evening hours trying to draw in cooler nighttime air.

Typically, the garage will get to mid 90s during the day, may get as low as 80 by the morning.
I would leave the doors up more in the evening, but just a risk of thievery, etc. Plus I've got nearby varmints that like garage spaces.

Man I would really say add an AC vent from central AC.

My power bill is already way too high.

But,, I wonder if cooling the garage will have an effect on the room above and the basement below?
Both of those are the hottest (or coldest in the winter) areas in my house.

Are your garage doors insulated?

Definitely don't do this.

Leave 2 to 3" gap open and squirrel cage blower moving the hot air from the ceiling out the bottom on the open gap.

I put a squirrel cage mounted to the ceiling facing the wall just above garage door tracks. I open the garage door into the first panel is at about a 30 degree angle off ceiling.

Squirrel cage sucks hot air off ceiling and blows it into that opening I created with door partially opened. Pushes the hottest air straight out of the garage.

It does cool the garage down a bit when you can get rid of the hottest air.

I tried all kinds of stuff but this has worked best for me.

Insulated door will help. And keep it closed as much as possible.

Water heater in garage? The newer heat pump water heaters will keep it cooler, but for that money you could get a small mini split installed. Or a window unit for that matter since you have several windows if you don’t mind the look.

What? Its a terrible idea because of hvac balance but it’s not illegal.

eta: i was wrong, i'll take my lumps: it's illegal because it could let CO into the house via ductwork.

I bought one of these for sitting outside on my deck. I am thinking of trying it in my garage.

I don't think that'd work in my high humidity environment

My garage has my gym in it and I've been using it at 90 degrees

Would be nice to get that down a bit.

I can’t imagine this is a good idea

To the OP. My neighbors have their garage insulated w an insulated door. It stays relatively bearable

Never and I mean NEVER vent your ax with your house system. This can cause negative pressure in your house and suck polluted air from cracks elsewhere.

If you don’t want a wall mounted mini split in the garage (mr cool has some cheap options you can easily install) then. Look to add radiant barrier insulation on your doors and see if you can add insulation to the walls/ ceiling. Most exterior garage walls have very little if any insulation as they are not in conditioned space

Yes cooling/heating the garage would help the room above it. Not so much basement

I thought about adding a vent from my A/C to the garage, but the structural framing prevented it. I insulated my garage door and I added insulation in the ceiling. But my garage and door gets the hot afternoon sun and I am pretty sure the garage walls are not insulated. If I had a window I would install a window unit.

look into mini splits, also there are units that can go through a hole in the wall. There are aftermarket insulation you can add to your doors to help.
