Just sowed some Rye seed (March update)

Just kind of threw it everywhere.
We’ll see how it goes in a couple of weeks!

Does the Rye growth indicate that there's enough sun for Bermuda to take over that area next summer?
Also, what can I do about clover?!

This filled in nicely!
I’m starting to wonder if this is a valid option in shady areas for a year around grass down here.
If you lose it for 2-3 months when you don’t really care to be outside anyway, what’s the big deal?
Just over seed in late Sept/early Oct…

Not a big area.
Three areas total.
Will water as often as I can and see what happens.
Looks like a legitimate rainy day next week too.

Will this fill in over the next 2 weeks or should I add some more seed? Never tried PRG before.
Today is day 10.

you can give it another few days to see if any more germinates, but I doubt it. Looks pretty sandy in those areas. Would consider throwing a thin layer of peat moss on those areas after seeding(or before). Will help retain moisture and better chance at germinating, since the sandy areas are likely drying out quickly.

Are you watering it to keep the seed moist?
Some of the seed may still be viable if birds haven’t gotten to it.
But you have to water it a lot. It’s a lot cooler now, so not as much as summer. But at least 3x a day.

I watered at least twice per day for the first seven days.
I was really asking if it would start spreading over the next couple of weeks, assuming that germination is pretty much done.
I’ve read that the can fill in through tillering.

You’re not going to get much fill in from PRG. Definitely not enough to fill that sparse area. Tillering is not really a “spread” of the plant itself, but just the leaves of the shoot.
There’s a reason our cool season brethren have to overseed their lawns every damn year.

Thanks. Makes sense.
Should I cut the grass before I throw more seed down?
There is some thin St. Aug and some weeds that have grown from all of the watering.
I also have starter fert that I have not used yet.

Looks like you got some “drift” from overwatering it in the beginning. The water made seeds pile up together.

Some improvement here with adding some seed and a starter fertilizer. I love the way this stuff looks...especially after a cut/mulch.
But not sure if I'll go through the trouble again once I have a fully established lawn next fall (I hope).
QUESTION: What can I do about the clover?

It can look really good. This was my annual rye from Feb this year. It likes a early spring hit of fert.

It does not spread.. as op said looks like it settled into low spots..
I use a two step when I do mine.. I rake then throw seed …. then use back of rake (flat side) to smooth and lightly cover seeds … then a few weeks later very lightly rake bare spots and over thin spots ( trying not to pull it thin sprouts). Seed again and smooth … the new sparse rye helps hold the new seeds and then lightly spray water by hand to dampen.. no sprinklers cause I am just getting it damp..
I have been doing mine pretty much at same time as you have and the second seed is filling in nicely..

I wouldn’t be complaining if I were you. I would kill for a southern grass that grew from seed as easily as ryegrass. It’s like cheating.

Is it too late to throw some down? We have some terribly bare ground that could use this.

This.
Keep rye seed wet and I’ll grow anywhere

Listen to thecoz above.
Raking and loosening dirt is important for a high rate of germination.
