In my backyard, I have a wood picnick table out by my fire pit. Every morning there are always like 10-20 flies crawling around on this table

Usually with flies, if you try to swat them they fly away really fast, but these flies don’t even move when I try to swat them. They are alive because they keep crawling around but When I swat a fly with my fly swatted the other flies don’t try to fly away they just kind of sit there like nothing is happening.

Not sure if this is making sense but it’s bizarre how these flies do nothing when I try to kill them

Does anyone know what could be the reason for this?

Sorry if this is a dumb question lol

I don’t have a problem killing them - I am just wondering why all of the flies just sit there and don’t try to fly around after I start swatting them

It’s bizarre

I suppose you could contact LSU AgCenter Dept of Entomology.

It does seem curious why they just stay there to get swatted.

You need to identify the fly type. Cluster flies may act this way normally. Others may have been exposed to pesticides or something.

Sounds like the a scene from a horror movie. Get a medium to investigate immediately, or call ghostbusters.

can you also use just sand in these? There are some places around my home that I don't want little corrosion nuggets sprayed.

It sounds like the flies you’re encountering might be cluster flies. Cluster flies tend to be slower and less reactive compared to other flies.
We used to have them on picnic tables next morning after eating watermelon. They are sluggish in cooler morning temps I’ve read.

Just want the opportunity to tell my fly war story. In Vietnam there are myriad types of flies.

But our favorites were the “elephant” flies that were normal size but had a narrow head with a long proboscis. Actually looked like a little flying African elephant. And then there were some humongous cadaver flies that only came out when there were dead bodies around. But when they smelled rotting flesh they arrived by the thousands in an instant and seemingly out of nowhere.

At night all the flies disappeared and they were replaced by voracious mosquitos. But that’s another insect war story.
