Embrace the knees for the beauty they are and enhance them with groundcover plantings where you don't need to mow the area. Look at it as a sort of zen garden where the knees take the place of the rocks.

I definitely do not want to kill the tree. This is in a suburb and I like my neighbor. I have a toddler who plays in the yard and just want to make sure he does not fall on one and get hurt. I have no problem with hitting them with an ax every few years.

I have one cypress and planted another recently. It's in a low area of my yard that gets a lot of water. I planted some irises around the base and let the rest of the area go wild while selectively picking out invasive plants.

Hustler mini z and a Scag freedom z never complained about shaving cypress knees to 3” mowing height.
