Embrace the knees for the beauty they are and enhance them with groundcover plantings where you don't need to mow the area. Look at it as a sort of zen garden where the knees take the place of the rocks.
This. I'm shocked at how many ppl are telling op to kill the tree. Why is having a low cut lawn in that area so important?

I definitely do not want to kill the tree. This is in a suburb and I like my neighbor. I have a toddler who plays in the yard and just want to make sure he does not fall on one and get hurt. I have no problem with hitting them with an ax every few years.

I have one cypress and planted another recently. It's in a low area of my yard that gets a lot of water. I planted some irises around the base and let the rest of the area go wild while selectively picking out invasive plants.

Thats my plan, I just mow over em as they grow, shaving as I go. I cant understand why someone plants the things, but I have 6 of em to contend with from the previous owner. All planted in terrible spots.
