How to Add Fill to Empty Lot
I'm looking to raise the grade of an empty lot in New Orleans with grass on it. The plan is to build on the lot in 6-8 months. I was wondering if I should remove the grass before pouring on dirt or just put the dirt on top. Or does it not matter either way.

There's no reason to remove the grass because you'd also be taking existing dirt away assuming someone is using a bobcat and not by hand. To add, if you're building on the area where the dirt will go, they will likely be adding more dirt and grading it depending on how high it needs to be for the base foundation. Honestly, i'd just have the contractor do it all at one time and not even worry about it now.

I forgot to mention in the OP that I'm getting the dirt for free from a friend who works in commercial construction and would otherwise be getting rid of it.

If you are planning to build on top of the fill, remove the top 4" of grass and dirt prior to adding fill. If not once the vegetation dies and decomposes it can cause voids or gaps in the soil.

These voids or gaps can cause foundation issues in the future.

Unless you know what you’re doing, don’t try to build a house pad yourself.

And btw, if you have to have inspections done, that engineer is going to want to know where that dirt came from to see if it’s even suitable for a pad.

Is it "select fill"? That's what you need for a building pad.

If it’s Nola, you’re likely driving piles, right? If so, fill material quality and/or grass removal would matter less.

But yes, if someone is giving you fill for free, it’s not going to be worth a damn for anything more than increasing the elevation.
