I'm just trying to figure out why you need to heat hot water.

If your water is already hot you wouldn't ever need to turn on the water heater. You would save a ton of electricity and money.

I find if you keep your empty gun clips on top of your hot water heater it saves room in your gun safe

Define "hot". If my water is at 125 is that hot? I think it is. But my 125 water will drop to say 122 when the heater is off, is 122 hot? I think it is. But the water heater would kick on and be heating hot water at 122 to 125. A water heater does indeed heat hot water.

Yes, first though, Im not a plumbing expert.

Since, Im not a plumber, please excuse me.

But why do you need to heat hot water?

Secondly, the heater will only kick on when the water cools off. If you shut it off it will have to heat colder water and work harder than just heating warm water.

You might not save any money, but you should be about equal.

There is a holiday inn express Im staying at right now.

From an energy standpoint, yes you will possibly save but the temp won't be falling enough to save you much with only 4 hour off times.

When not in use it is very possible your water heater cycles off for 4 hours or longer intervals anyway. If that is the case, you won't save anything.

you will save 10x more by thermal wrapping the water heater so it stays hot longer before kicking back on, then by turning it off so it needs to reheat the entire tank capacity again
