Honda HRN not mulching very well

Over the last few weeks my Honda HRN has been spitting out piles of grass from the back left side. I hosed off any clumps, sharpened the blades, and checked to make sure the mulching hatch was closed. Still does it. I mow every 3 days so it's not getting super long between cuts. Anybody else have this issue? It bags like it should but my compost bin is almost full of clippings already so I'd rather not have to do that

Check the RPM while running, the governor spring is a weak link on these things. Small engine inductive tachometers exist.

Thanks, just ordered a tach and a governor spring. Didn't realize the tachs were that cheap.

What year is your HRN? I'm going to purchase one this week.

I bought it in 2021. I probably put close to 100 hours on it a year. Jet got clogged on it once and I stripped the screw getting to it but other than that it's been solid. Still looks new.

I have one as well. I think the deck design is flawed. Grass always gets trapped wet or dry so it never fully mulches

Mine never has an issue but I also have mine running at the very top end of the recommended rpms. 100 - 150 rpms makes a difference.

Can anyone of you HRN owners confirm you don't get a strip down the left side of the lawn when mowing? My GRV does this and it's not the wheel pushing the grass down because it's inside the wheel area. It aggravates the crap out of me

I don't get one but it probably depends on grass type and cut height.

That's what mine is doing now. It aggravates the hell out of me. Even doe it when I mow over the strips a second time

My HRX does this if the grass is long and thick. Cutting in the morning dew doesn’t help but that’s really the only option at the moment since it’s so hot. If I bag it there’s no problem.

Watched a video explaining what *might* be the cause. Check to make sure all 4 wheels are at the same height. Then measure the bottom of the deck in 4 places - right behind the front wheels and right in front of the back wheels.

This guy's mower was all set at the same height but one wheel was at 2" and the rest were at 2 1/4". He couldn't figure out how to fix it so he bought a new one and it was perfect.

Hope this helps....

What do you have yours running at? Seeing on Google that it should be at 3600 rpms

No load I have it at about 3675 in my grass it goes down to 3600 - 3625 and I only mulch. Before it was around 3500 and going down to almost 3400. Also, I did a full tune up, new blades, NGK sparkplug, new air filter, cleaned and oiled bushings, changed out the thermal wax pellet, etc before adjusting the governor to make sure mower was baselined and I wasn't masking another issue.

Yeah, and sometimes cheap tachs simply don't work very well. I have a DTI 20k I bought almost 20 years ago and it's been flawless on everything. I use their TinyTachs on my generators and I've installed them on equipment for others.

I guess I ordered the wrong governor spring. It's a little smaller and made the mower Rev crazy high and start hunting. I pressure washed the underside of the deck again and painted it with some rust arresting gloss paint. Doing a little bit better now, though. The paint will probably be gone in 2 weeks but it was on my shelf so nothing lost.

You can also reshape the hook ends to give the spring a little more slack or tighten up a weakened spring. I found a very light spring and nested it with the factory spring and it's solved that rpm hunting issue.

I just ordered an Oregon Gator blade. From what I've read I'll have to put a few washers between the blade and deck to lower it enough for it to clear the mulching/discharge baffle. Will hopefully get more tip speed from a single blade than the double system on it now. If not, oh well. It's a $30 experiment.
