One side of our kitchen has always been several degrees hotter than the house. For years I thought it was due to that side being "boxed" in and the Ac vents being on the other side of the kitchen.

There are two 36 inch "old school" florescent light fixtures in kitchen (four bulbs). I've never thought about florescent lights giving off heat but these do, not just the bulbs, but the fixtures too.

What should I replace them with? I'm assuming LED will not give off heat but be much brighter?

I found these: Amazon LED Lights. .

Any other suggestions or advice?

I pulled the ballasts out of mine and installed leds in them using the existing fixtures. I had to swap keystones and rewire but the YouTube showed me how to do that.

Stexas has it right. Leave the existing fixtures but gut the ballasts.

Otherwise you may have to paint your whole ceiling.

The ballasts are the heat producers in a fluorescent fixture. LEDs are a better solution.

Here is a solution that would work with your current fixture

I've also used those toggled leds from Home Depot. They are great.

Those are high kelvin so will be bright . Find some 2700k (kelvin) led tubes and they will be "warmer".

Thanks for all the advice. Went the toggled route and it turned out great.

LED replacements are advancing too fast for me to keep up. Now there are fluorescent tube replacements that work with the ballast... making the switch to LED simpler.

LINK

I've bought bulb replacements and diy parts from Super Bright Lights for 10 years and nothing has failed. That 1st purchase was T8 tube LEDS that are still working just fine. They did require taking the ballast out.

Maybe I'm just unlucky, but lighting that I buy from HD, Lowes and Amazon tend to have problems. For Amazon at least there seems to be no quality check on their ever-changing suppliers.

Some LED bulbs will work with ballasts still in place but I would personally remove them.
LED gives you the option to get whatever color and intensity you desire.
2700k will be soft. 5000k will be extremely harsh. Between is between.

The hard part is getting the LED just right so it won't over power the room.

2 of the lowest power toggled tubes replaced 4 florescent tubes and is still almost too bright.

Originally went cool white, but too bright, dropped down to soft white -- two LEDs equal 4 florescent.

I had 8 of those 4x florescent fixtures (think Walmart lighting) in my basement and I have to say it was one of the most satisfying experiences to work my way around the room removing the heavy arse ballasts from those shitty buzzing fixtures and some that didn't work at all and ending up with this massive pile of ballasts, ancient tubes and old wiring. I kept a good bit of the wires for other projects but hauled the rest of that pile away to the dump.

ETA when I turned the lights on afterwards and met with instant lighting and the sweet sweet silence of life itself I wanted to cry.
