It was cruising around my butterfly bush - thought it was a hummingbird at first due to its size.

They are pretty cool to see. We have some that come around from time to time

Thanks - definitely a cool thing to watch. Have never seen one of these as long as I've lived here

No problem. I’ve never heard of them. I saved your picture and put it into the picture insect ID app.

Sphinx or hawk moths are actually pretty common around La but usually mistaken as a hummingbird or even bumblebee. I see them visiting a large patch of gingers. Most species are night fliers. The caterpillar of the spotted hawk moth is better known/hated than the adult.... tomato hornworm.

I've seen these several times. The fact you got pictures that good is impressive. Those things are fast! I've only seen them in the late evening.

My wife called to me a week or two back and said “there is a hummingbird caught in a flower”. I looked, and when it stopped thrashing about told her it was a moth. Then I went and helped it get unstuck. Don’t think I’d ever seen one before.

I saw one for the first time this year near ATL in our garden. Really cool insect, luckily didn't get the hornworms on the tomatoes. A miracle I suppose.
