Couple of questions and if anyone has any tips that would be great.

If I have a pretty new house is there anything I need to be concerned with in the attic? It looks like it’s all pex up there but I didn’t go hunting for problem areas.

Also, I have one of those backflow deals for my sprinklers coming out of the ground. I already turned the sprinklers off and drained that valve and left it open. Do I need to cover that also? I’ve had it crack before but that was before I knew to drain it.

Thanks for the help.

I always cover the sprinkler bell housing just to be safe but not sure it’s necessary. Only takes a few minutes so I do.

Frozen water expansion in the valve is what cracks it, not the temp baw. Smart thinking about draining your line though b/c I forgot to do it myself

In my brain's heart I know this. I still feel like I'm playing Russian roulette leaving it exposed though.

Just make sure to have your pipes insulated where the water comes into the house from the street and any outside exposed pipes like for faucets for hoses if that applies to your situation, etc.

For one night freezes like we normally get in N.O. I'll crack open my farthest water line, which is a line to an outside faucet for my hoses and let it drip just a bit and I've never had a pipe freeze doing that.

I doubt you'd have to worry about water lines in your attic if living in the south. It's not like it's going to get that cold anytime soon.

much of Louisiana is about to be below freezing for 5 straight days, with temps getting to single digits in north LA and in the teens in south LA

I'm in N.O. and according to the weather forecast I'm seeing, the only time we will get to 32 is on Monday night with the rest of the week and into next week in the low 40's.

I don't doubt it will be single digits and in the teens a bit north of us as this front moves through.

Sprinklers go to your valve box on top of each valve is a knob open them up and leave them open if you can stuff the valve box with and old blanket towel insulation. You don’t want your valves splitting.

I think the last big freeze we had in North LA was Dec 2017, and it didn't get down to single digits though.

That time I turned on all faucets (inside and out) a little bit and then shut off the water supply by the road. The issue I had was the outdoor faucet heads froze. Is there any way to keep the faucet heads from freezing? Is there a better way of doing this?

Background info: 80 year old house built on a slab. I don't know what dumbass installed the outdoor faucet system, but all of them are PVC and run under ground and then come up along side the walls.

I have 2 like those on my shop. I wrap them with a towel and duct tape them. Then put a 5 gallon bucket over them. Then I drip the sink inside.

Shouldn’t have to say it, but... please disconnect your damn hoses from the hose bib.
