I’ve built new shutters for the front of my house. What do you recommend for hanging them? I’ve considered aluminum French cleat type hangers, that I’d presumably mount using Tapcon screws. I’ve also considered actual hinges and hold-downs, although we don’t need these to be functional shutters.

ETA: yeah I didn’t want to change the topic on your thread. Mine are built. Just need pointers on install.

If they are not functional, just anchor them into the brick.

Functional exterior shutters on modern houses are rare unless they are the roll up type window coverings.

I have an older house with all my upstairs window with functioning shutters. All my windows are double hung wood sash with the screens on the inside of the house that can be lifted to clear the lower sash and open the window to access the hardware to close the shutters or open them as need be.

In brick I've always used hardwood dowels and stainless or exterior-rated construction screws. 1/4" or 5/16" oak dowels are cheap, hold very well, and I've never had a shutter or anything come loose with that method.

Not familiar with this. So, drill a hole in the brick. Then, do you have have to epoxy the dowel in?

Nope, no epoxy. I have a cordless SDS+ hammer drill but any would do, use a like-sized bit taped off at about 1-3/4" drilling depth, drill and blow out the hole then tap in a length of dowel and snap it off in the hole. Can hit it on the side with a hammer a little to help it break off clean. I pre-drill the shutters and mark out the holes by tapping in a nail on the brick where I want the shutter if I have somebody helping, if not I just layout with a tape measure and 2' level. The screws will expand the dowel enough to provide all the holding strength needed, I set cabinets on concrete the same way.

I hung mine in the brick with Z clips and attached them with redhead hammer set anchors. I find it’s very easy to strip the tapcons even using their tool
