Hanging planter out of cedar fence board

Have some extra cedar fence boards. Using them to make some hanging planter boxes. Need to paint them black. Any recommendations on what kind of paint to use and do they need to be sealed? What’s the best way to do it? Thanks

Stain. Ebony or whatever the darkest you can find.
They also sell dye and you can look at burning as an option.

I like that idea about blackening the boards by lightly burning. Before the use of metals were known to man, they make arrows and spears out of wood sharpened to a point and then set over a fire just long enough to lightly burn the wood and that made the points harder.
Also, you many want to think about stapling some landscape fabric on the inside before putting your soil in them so it doesn't run out the drain holes you will need to drill in the bottoms.
