I’ve always gotten helpful advice here. My front yard is looking better than ever thanks to advice from here.My backyard looks terrible. I’d like to get some grass to grow but it’s pretty shady. What is my best bet? Sod? I’ve looked at some shade tolerant seed mixes as well. What time of year is best to do something? I appreciate any advice.

Well, exactly how shady is it? If it is not deep shade, st Augustine will grow. If it is deep shad, like under a live oak tree, grass won’t grow so you might as well settle for bark or some type of shade garden.

Honestly, that is some pretty sandy looking soil you have there. I would assume you need some organic matter mixed in. Have you had it tested?

Most of the area is under the canopy of a couple of giant oak trees. So no go on any grass there? It I certainly sandy. Bark seems pretty unsightly. Any better ways to use the space?

I had 2 large live oaks in my front yard. I stopped killing weeds or applying any chemicals at all for that matter and started mowing about 4” high and let grow what would grow. It filled in nicely with a variation of greenery. Not the best looking yard up close but it looked fine from the street.

I was having hell with mine and realized most of it was due to soil compaction. I aerated it and started dumping grass clippings on it. Got zoysia seed to grow and st aug plugs to start spreading this year. Hopefully it sticks

how much foot traffic do you have in the bare spots in the yard? I found that the shade doesn't matter so much as the foot traffic does.

Core aeration, zoysia plugs, water, water, water, mow regularly and be patient.

I was always under the impression St. Aug > Zoysia in shade.

My suggestion, I’d try buying/laying a few pieces of St Aug sod as an experiment. Water them, mow high, and fertilize (follow LSUAg recommendation). See if they start to spread before going all in on a sod job.
