Right now I am debating about putting a soft start kit on the AC to be able to run that on the generator too. I'd have to see if I can run that using my 30A connection or even my current generator
I have MicroAir soft starters on my 3 ton units (I have 2) and they aren’t lying when they advertise dropping LRA by 70%. Both of mine prove that. Reference my thread here:

Also note that the regular thermal-magnetic breakers in your home panel are considered 80% devices, meaning don’t run 30A on a 30A breaker. Keep it below 24A (80% of 30) or upsize your receptacle, cables, and breaker for 50A.

I’m looking at getting a portable generator mainly for Hurricane season when we lose power. I don’t know a whole lot about generators. We live in a 2 story house with approximately 1900 sq ft. All bedrooms and full bathrooms are upstairs. During a storm we don’t really use the upstairs other than showers. We’d like to run a few window units, fridge, freezer, and possibly washer and dryer if power is out for an extended time. What size generator or generators should I get for this type of space? I’ve looked online a little and read that inverters are supposed to be “cleaner” power. What is the difference between an inverter and generator? Also, fuel consumption would be a factor. I remember after Ida, gas was extremely hard to find and expensive.

Its very simple and I'm definitely not an electrician. Just shut the main breaker off before you start. I installed mine yesterday, Reliance 30 amp Power inlet box $60 Romex 10/3 wire with ground $60 30 amp double pole breaker $10 20' 30 amp cord $50 Other odds/ends $30
I don’t see it mentioned here ever but with these backfeed setups are y’all un-bonding the neutral and ground on the generator to make it a floating neutral?
From what I’ve read this is the “right” way to do it but I doubt most people bother let-alone know what that means.
