Anyone in Louisiana have solutions to prevent mildew and mold from getting on things stored in the garage?

We keep one door open when we are home so basically at least 6 hours total a day if that helps.

Will a 70 pint humidifier work do the trick?

Yes, get one that you can install a drain line to a floor drain (if you have one) or plumb it to the outside so you don't have to empty it.

No, but a 70 pint dehumidifier might.

But really, I would guess you will have this problem as long as you keep the one door open, and mainly in winter and spring with mild temps and as wet as it is. I keep mine closed and have never had a problem. And honestly I don’t know if the dehumidifier will do anything with that door open even for just 6 hours.

Put a oscillating or box fan on a timer to run throughout the day.

i have a massive garage and had horrible mold & mildew issues since the cinderblock in the back of it is basically underground. everything i had in the garage got ruined after moving into this house because i had never had to deal with this before and didn't realize the humdity was so bad.

you could swipe your hand on the back wall and water would gush down it for several days after a hard rain.

i bought a $140 dehumidifier from costco and snaked the draining hose under the garage door (bought a 1" PVC i use as a sleeve so the door won't crush that section of the hose) and into the gutter drain and haven't had a problem in 3 years.

literally..zero problems since. that costco dehumidier is the absolute bomb. highly recommended.

the plan was originally to see if this would hold up 24/7 and drill a hole in the wall somewhere but that's tricky since 3 out of 4 walls are underground or open into an interior room. its a bit ghetto but works just fine. i couldn't keep up with the amount of water it pumps out if it didn't include a hose & pump.

i set the humidity to 55% (default is 45%) so it doesn't have to work so hard and it turns off automatically when it hits that level. thing just keeps on chugging.

in short; this will solve your problem. i have a 3 car garage that was so damp before i didn't think an army of dehumidifiers would help but this one knocked it out in less than 6 hours after setting it up.

its this guy:

They work ok, but an often cheaper, more durable option is a small window AC unit. I have a small shop area that is basically mostly tool storage with room for a few work benches. Went through two GE dehumidifiers, setup on timers so they only ran at night for some hours, and both failed after a year of use. Bought a small Toshiba window unit, cut a hole between the shop area and garage area, and it has been flawless. Removes more moisture faster, and can make the shop bearable in the summer if needed.

I have a regular standard door on the opposite side of the garage door that leads to a brick patio. To the right of that door, I installed a window unit. It runs on a timer during the day.

thats the nice thing about a dedicated dehumidifier. you can set the humidity level you're comfortable with and then it will only run when needed. great for winter months when the thing rarely kicks on.
