Opened garage door with opener today, opened fine.

Went to close it, it went down about 2 feet and stopped. Opened all the way up and then it went down about 4 feet. Did it again about 6 feet. Did it again all the way down.

After getting it all the way down, I opened and closed it about 10 times with the no problems.

Any ideas what caused this problem?

May be hanging from lack of lubrication.

Get a can of garage door lube and spray the lubrication points. Youtube is your friend.

The number of blinks you get on the opener can give you some insight, but generally this sounds like a safety sensor issue...

1.) Make sure the safety sensors are lined up - look for a green light coming from both sensors.

2.) Check for any loose wire connections on the safety sensors - these can be wiggled loose when the door is closing causing it to reverse up.

3.) Lube the door hinges, rollers, and springs to smooth out vibrations.

Good luck!

And clean without obstruction. Something as simple as a piece of leaf or such on a cobweb can dangle down into the beam and interrupt it.

Our older ones had a force adjustment, it would get out of whack sometimes and I’d have to adjust it. It’s the part that senses if it hits something. Our newer ones don’t have that and are very sensitive to everything being lubed and bind free. Do you have any sag in the panels as they go down? We had to have some stiffeners added bc the sag was adding enough resistance to cause it to think it hit something.

Lubed it up, hopefully that takes care of future issues.

I don't think it was sensor. They were lined up. Door would just stop and not go back up as if sensor was activated.

No sag in garage door.

same happened to ours. had the guy come out. busted circuit board. said very common issue and they need be plugged into surge protector. got one from amazon and plugged it in that way.

why would they not just provide a 10 dollar surge protector if they know its an issue?

A hinge broke on my garage door on two separate occasions causing it to do the exact thing you mentioned.
