So, my fall project this year is a screened in deck with a fireplace. I had initially thought about building a cinderblock core structure and wrapping it in brick veneer. But now the wife wants to do a wood slats look. I guess she’s thinking something like shiplap. She’s sent me a ton of pics and I would honestly rather go this route than deal with masonry, to which I have little experience.

My question is, can I safely build a wooden frame for the fireplace, cover it in cement backer and fire blocks for the actual fireplace? And run a rolled steel chimney pipe through the center? Is this sufficient heat barrier? If not, what else do I need to do?

I don't see why not, that's how it would be framed up in a house.

Just make sure you get a good weatherproof/waterproof seal on the outside. Plywood/OSB/Gypsum Sheathing with housewrap and a cladding

The fire boxes will have specs that follow building codes with clearances for wood framing.

Not a problem at all if using an enclosed(complete) fireplace. Just follow the manufacturer's specs for clearance and ventilation to the fire box.

I'd highly recommend one of these kits.

Stone Wood Products Kit

I built our fireplace several years ago. The design on a fireplace is pretty important.
