Both the one in my garage and utility room went out. I changed the bulbs so that's not it. The house is only 5 years old. Would the ballast go out already? Is it easy to change?

I ripped out about 20 of those ugly, heavy, buzzing ballasts and direct wired for LED equivalent tubes and it's the best decision I ever made.

You fix one and another goes out or you'll go slowly insane from the awful florescent lighting quality and constant buzzing.

Chances are if the ballast was bad it would have a nasty smell associated with it, especially if the power was on to the fixture.

Look for melted tarlike material on the light by the ballast or on the floor below it if the light doesn't have some type cover.

Just converted mine to LED as well. I have three remaining that I will take care of this week. Pretty simple to do (also plenty of tutorials on youtube if you need help).

I use these. Pretty easy to install and work nice.

Make sure the metal end cover notches at the end of the bulbs are locked in perpendicular to the floor. You can definitely tell when they lock in.

Unless your running the fixture 24/7, I'd be surprised if the ballast is already bad.

Not gonna happen in a 5 year old fixture, they stopped making those magnetic ballasts long before then

So do you think it the ballast after only 5 years?

Do you have a multimeter to check to see if you are getting power at the fixture?

I had two bulbs burn out in our utility room. Switched them with led replacements from northern tool that work with ballasts and direct wire. Figure when the ballasts go out I’ll just rewire them. Ended up replacing kitchen and shed bulbs too. $15 for a two pack.

Try some good bulbs to see if it’s that.
