EV Home Charger to Generator Plug Conversion

The previous owners of our house had installed an EV charger in the garage. They took the actual Tesla charger when they sold the house, but the outlet/receptacle in the garage that is on a dedicated 50amp circuit breaker on our main electrical panel is currently unused. The receptacle is located inside the garage but on an exterior wall. Not sure what size/gauge the wire from the outlet to circuit breaker is, but both the circuit breaker and receptacle are 50amps.
Is it worth exploring the idea of building/converting this to a generator plug? This would require relocating the garage outlet to an exterior location and converting the receptacle to the required generator inlet plug and an interlock on the main panel is probably needed too. But those improvements seem pretty straight forward.... what am I not considering?

I’m an electrical contractor and to be honest it will probably be as much work as installing a new line. You’ll have to likely move that breaker to the top of the panel for the interlock and splice the wire where the charger was.

Wouldn't run a generator in the garage anyway, better to get a dedicated generator receptical with the proper interlock too. Leave that EV plug alone, make sure it's mentioned if/when you sell the house in the future.

I have a 50amp EV receptacle under my carport to charge the wife's car. I also use it for my portable generator to run my house.
Are you talking about running a whole home auto generator, or just a portable generator you are going to use the one time the power goes out every 3 years?

That is a dangerous assumption because an EV charger circuit is built to deliver power out to a vehicle, whereas a generator inlet must safely feed power in to the main panel. Simply swapping the receptacle won't work without reversing the feed logic, verifying the exact wire gauge under heavy load, and installing a proper mechanical interlock to prevent backfeeding the grid.
