2 switches..1 for light (on fan), 1 for fan itself

Light switch doesnt work

Fan switch, turns on BOTH light and fan

What's the wiring problem. Wire running from attic to switches has red, bare copper wire, white, and black.

How should those run to dual switches?

No chains on fan to turn off light that way.

Thanks in advance

Just compare your wiring with this.

Sounds like the hot for your light and your fan motor are tied together. Use kengal's diagram to rewire it

Yup,

And Im guessing they are just tied together at the fan, so I would check that first before messing with the switches.

A lot of spec homes today are built with the second switch, but fans arent installed by the builders for cost savings. They just stick a light up there, but make it easy for the homeowner to install a fan/light.

newer fans are also being configured to work with just one switch it would appear. i recently purchased 3 new Casablanca that will only work with 1 switch. there is no installation option for a 2nd switch.

ever thought about adding an alexa enabled switch to the fan that controls both the fan and light?

But if you flip the switches off, the fan and light will not respond to the remote.

Using smart wall switches is the best (but more expensive) option.

Just leave the switch on. Allows dual function with only one electric source. And alexa voice control

Still not a better solution than the smart wall switches, unless there is only one source, which is unlikely in the OP's case.

Understand, just giving him a cheap option just in case.

Are there two individual switches in a 2 gang box or 2 switches in a single gang box?

From what ive seen those most likely have some sort of remote control that they use instead of normal switches. It uses a little cr2032 battery and you just cut out a small piece of drywall next to your other switches.

correct. they all came with remotes for light/fan operation, no pull cords.
