I have a small metal building in my yard that I’d like to dress-up a bit. Would like to wrap it in either wood or hardiplank. Has anyone done this before?

Pics of building? Doors and windows may be a problem if you use furring strips with siding attached

Can't grab a pic right now, but no windows and one 36x80 metal door.

Basically this lean-to, but with an opening for a 36x80 metal door. Has a steel frame as well.

In neighborhoods around here, sometimes it has to match the house, or no metal siding so a lot of people go the hardy route.

I'm not a big fan of drilling holes in a "water tight", maintenance free material, and covering it in a material that requires maintenance (regular painting, caulking, etc.). People do it all the time, but I guess I'm lazy like that. You would also have to move that flashing on the sides so water doesn't drip down the back side or your siding would rot from the back where you can't re-paint.

Maybe install a trellis 6" in front of it and plant some vines? Or just plant a large shrub in front of it is what I would do.

I agree with you, but it’s visible from the street and a “honey-do.”

Vines are an interesting suggestion. Will present the idea to the boss.

You could get some 3’ pieces with the same profile of a complimentary color and create a wainscot look.

I would only do this if she really wanted a new look.

How do you plan to use the building?

I truly don’t know. It houses an inoperable water well pump with ample storage space. I thought about just breaking it down, but I hate to get rid of potential storage.
