I need some big shrubs/trees on the side of our house that gets very little sun. Clay and nasty soil.

I have some that just catch a little morning sun. They bloom like crazy in the spring then look sparse AF the rest of the year. Wouldn't recommend.

Select a spot where it will receive light shade to protect the plant from the hot afternoon sun. Camellias cannot tolerate full sun all day. Camellias prefer shade or filtered sun.

I have shi-shi camillias in a shady spot that gets about 1-2 hours of morning and afternoon sun. They are doing very well.

I have some shi shi’s as well. They get about 6 hours of afternoon sun and are doing great.

My neighbors at our old house had some along the fence that were under some water oaks that grew pretty big. Then the water oaks started dropping big limbs so they cut them down and the Camellias started dyeing.

Mine are all in the shade. Most are in the back yard under a canopy of two Tulip Poplars and a motherf***ing Water Oak. I suppose they get sun in the winter after the leaves fall, but not all that much because of the angle of the sun.

Sure, they need a little bit of sun but do better in mostly shaded areas.
