4 year old GE Profile top control dishwasher. Giving off foul odor (moldy) every so often.

1. Never had an issue until someone else stayed at our place and loaded/ran the dishwasher.
2. I assumed there was an clogged line issue or something as the sink seemed to be draining slower than usual.
3. Plumber comes out, fills up sink a couple times and drains fine. Starts/stops dishwasher and says it drains fine.
4. After running multiple cleaning w/ white vinegar the smell goes away.
5. The smell keeps returning after washing intermittently and I'm tired of dealing with it. First occurred 2 months ago. Has occurred 2/3 times since. I can't figure it out.

Where do I go from here? What would your plan of action be? Anything easy/obvious to check out? Should I just replace it?

I'm going to be pretty bummed if I replace it and the issue persists due to it being a drain line or something, but also don't have much patience at this point.

Do you have a drain option on your control panel? I have a Kitchen Aid and I press the Cancel (Drain) button and the dishwasher pump purges residual water in the machine. If I don't do that, a day or two later, an odor as you describe occurs when the wash cycle starts.

affresh dishwasher cleaning tablets. Maybe use one of those and see what goes down? also check to make sure there isn't any chunks of food trapped in the bottom of the dishwasher.

It doesn't have that option. The cancel button is also the Start.

I’ve done the afresh multiple times as well.

Have you cleaned the filter at the bottom?

There was a little water at the bottom under the filter this morning. I vacuumed it out again.

Guessing next step would be to take the drain line out from the disposal and vacuum that? Disposal seems to not be as effective as prior. Wonder if that could be the issue?

You probably have some nasty water in a loop in your hose between your dishwasher and your sink/ disposal. I've had that happen. It stinks generally when I haven't ran the dishwasher for awhile and it starts up to drain any residual water left before running a cycle.

You can pull your dishwasher out and replace that hose, they are cheap. It goes from the bottom of your dishwasher to the sink and most are some what universal.

If its not in that hose, then it has to be in the bottom of your dishwasher.

Thanks - maybe I'll try to replace that before the dishwasher.

Your drain hose to the disposal should run to the underside of your countertop and then back down to the disposal hookup. Otherwise the pump pumps water up and gets most of it into the drain. The rest of it returns back into the bottom of the unit. I would check that first.

High loop makes sense. I think I'll replace the hose and do the high loop with a new one.
