Recently received two quotes for roughing in plumbing. One was a per sqft price and the other charged for each drop. Does anyone know why there would be a difference in the way they price? The guy that charged by the drop also offered select fixtures that he warranty's while the other guy will install the fixtures without warranty but we have to supply them. Just curious which is more common.

Get a third quote and see which one it most resembles.

sq ft price is more often than not, costing you more, because it is charging a standard profit they want to be making based on the sq footage of the home, rather than the actual work needed. but if this guy does tract housing at volume discounts he may be cheaper then the price per drop guy.

per drop is charging based on the job and material costs

as suggested get at least one more quote, and i would get 2 more quotes, then compare all 4 and see where you are.

me personally, when it comes to plumbing fixtures, i want the plumber to tell me whats best to use and easiest to work on later when you have issues rather then me having to pick them out

Price per drop.

Per sqft for plumbing is really odd, unless like keekar suggested, he does volume/tract housing where it’s all standardized.

I’d be hesitant to go with a $/sqft plumber. There’s absolutely zero plumbing in a bedroom, or if total sqft a porch or garage. Meanwhile, outdoor kitchens, extra fixtures in a shower, a bidet in a bathroom, multiple water heaters, etc. can greatly influence the plumbing work required without modifying the sqft.

Plumbing costs can be hard to anticipate. The big shops often have a set fee for each task that may seem high unless the work takes longer than expected. Independents may charge by the hour plus some adjustment up for complexity. Last time I saw my plumber he said there was a push within the industry for more task-based charging.

On a few plumbing upgrades I've always contacted plumber 1st, bought the fixtures 2nd and called him back when the order was delivered and inspected 3rd. The manufacturer gives the warranty. If the fixtures I wanted seemed overly complicated I'd ask his opinion and take his advice.

Many plumbers don't want the hassle of having to guess their clients' design taste or have the time to keep up on all the fixtures available. That's a designer's job.

I had a plumber want to charge me 2k to install 2 toilets and 2 sinks. Everything was already plumbed up and the previous equipment removed…. Literally just unbox the new shite and install. Id get a few quotes some of these people are ripoffs.

I had one want to charge me $600 to install a water heater. New water heater is sitting right next to old one. All he had to do was disconnect and connect old one. I was going to have the old one drained when he showed up and I was going to handle disposal of old water heater.
