Deep freezer question

Just picked up an upright deep freezer from Best Buy and laid it on its side in the bed of my truck. The guy from Best Buy told me to wait 48 hours before I turn it on since I laid it sideways. Is that really necessary? It seems like a little overkill to me. Seems like maybe it’s just store policy for him to tell me that
It was in the back of my truck for about 30 minutes

Been told this for decades. It has something to do with oil or something in the compressor that needs to settle. Was always told it could lock up if you don't wait.
Seems like that had changed in the last few years but, why risk it?
ETA: good move getting the upright. Had a chest freezer for years and stuff would work it's way to the bottom and never come out again.

Thatnks. Had a lot of people tell me to get the upright. My only concern with time is that I’m supposed to pick a deer up from the processor on Friday and I’d like to plug it in to see if it works properly first.

Is it frozen? If you put it all in a yeti type ice chest with a bag of ice it'll stay frozen solid for a few days at least.

Upright is the way to go.
That deer will be fine in an ice chest for several days as long as you keep it iced down and in the shade especially if you have a yeti style cooler.
It’s better to wait to plug it in than rush it and ruin the damn thing.
Last, buy the freezer alarms. They’re worth every penny

Tell the processor that you need a few days to pick up so he freezes it for you. Gives you time in case.
Compressor oil will drain in 24 hours. Give gravity a day and plug that bad boy in!

I picked up an old side by side fridge/freezer off Facebook about 6 months ago. I laid it on its side to get it home… maybe 15-20 minutes. I think I plugged it in the next day, and it hasn’t had any issues

I would let it sit overnight…that should be adequate.

I've always done 24 hours if laid down. I have never had an issue.

Same. 24 hours is what I was always told

Should it not work properly Best Buy will take it back, file a claim against the manufacturer, and replace freezer should the thing mess up. Nor will the manufacturer question them on whether it was laid on its side because Best Buy purchases in so much volume from them. If you need the freezer immediately and know they have more in stock I’d plug the thing in because obviously they have a decent warranty on those things. If you can wait then do like everyone is saying and give it 24-48 hours. Me personally I’d wait unless I absolutely needed to use the freezer immediately. Seems like the bulk of the appliances only last 7-8 years these days. Especially on a high quality washer, dryer, and refrigerator. Now that I just said that my 8 year old dishwasher will go out tonight. I swear it seems like I keep an open tab with those guys for appliances and TV’s.

Plugged it in this morning. About 40 ish hours in and it’s running fine. Stuck a bottle of water in there when I turned it on and it’s frozen solid now.
Any good recs on a temp alarm for it?
