Rat problem in Lakeview NOLA. Keep eating my green backyard tomatoes. I've caught a few in rat traps. Any better ideas than the snap traps?
Best bait to use in the snap traps?
I've got a dog that uses the yard.

I'm in Mid-City and luckily have no issues with rats eating up my back yard vegetable garden. I do see the occasional rat, usually in my back shed or ground floor woodworking shop.
I keep snap traps set and use peanut butter as bait and that has been the most consistently successful bait for me.
I don't have any dog to worry about and if I did I'd probably do one of those water traps with a 5 gallon paint bucket, ramp and soda can on a coat hanger. Check out u-tube for videos on how to make them. They seem to work pretty good too and are pet friendly.

Just one bite baits will eliminate your rat issues. We use to get them in our shed and shop from the canal but we never see them any longer after baiting with just one bite.

The live traps work great for this. They sell them at ace. Can put them around kids or pets without issues.
I’ve gone from having no trace of rodents to killing 10 or more in a week at the first sight, so just keep setting them. Move them around a little, etc

Barrel with top swing door. Rub some old peanut butter and crumbs ontop. When they step on it they'll fall into the barrel. If you trying to kill them add water.
Warning: don't set the trap during the day or you'll kill every squirrel in the area.

Have you tried a cat? My rodent issues have gone way down since I found a kitten when I was changing a tire on the side of the interstate

Tunnel traps come in different brands and varieties. Cost a bit more but are safe around pets and kids.
Example: LINK
Otherwise, get an outdoor cat.
Peanut butter is what I've always used. The only drawback is that some rats are skilled at licking it off without setting off the trap so you have to get it in there good under the mechanism so that it is hard for them to pull that feat off.

YouTube 5 gallon bucket rat traps. Super easy and super effective

I just ran across a youtube video by a farmer who swears by setting out small containers of equal mix baking soda and Jiffy honey cornbread mix. The sweet cornbread mix attracts them to eat it and the baking soda forms a gas in their insides. They can't burp or fart so they die. No poisons that could secondarily be transferred to other animals.
