Cypress Tree Planting

My house backs up to I-10. There's a large field between my yard and the road, but there's still road noise I'd like to reduce. I've ordered 10 cypress tree saplings. I'm hoping they eventually grow into a visual and noise wall. Is 5' apart too close to plant them? These saplings are very small, about 2' tall. Most things I've read say 10'-15' apart, but since I'm wanting to create a wall, is it okay?

now is not the time to plant deciduous trees unless you have a way to water them. If they are potted leave them in the pots and plant them once the leaves drop
young cypress is kind of pyramid shaped. Pretty trees but yes you need to space them out a bit

Did you order kneeless cypress?

Also, because they are deciduous, much of the year you won't have your wall. Consider Magnolia

Are they going to work initially? Sure.
But it's a Cypress tree. Eventually, you're going to have 10 to 20 feet of clearance at ground level before you hit the first branches/foliage. So they are probably not the best for blocking out the sights and sounds of the interstate long-term.

So many magnolia trees died around BR in last year’s drought I’d be careful about those

Spruces or Douglas fir trees. Think evergreen xmas tree types.

Is that really a thing? Where can you get these if so?

Yes it's a thing. Ours were purchased from a nursery in Forrest Hill La. a number of years ago. Had to specifically ask for the kneeless

5' apart is too close and I would not plant cypress unless it's of the kneeless variety. I don't believe that you'll achieve what you desire with cypress trees. Give Bamboo some consideration.

Clumping bamboo is the best thing I can think of for creating a giant wall. My neighbor has a few hundred feet if it planted on the property line. It's as close to a wall as you can get. Beware, it gets pretty deep if not trimmed. His is 40 across in areas.

I agree. Leeland cypress may be a better fit for what you desire.

If he's planting near I-10 these trees won't make it. However a Carolina Sapphire/Arizona Cypress will thrive provided you plant it in a well drained area. I have over 100 on my property in Ascension Parish and they look fantastic and smell good too. They did really well during the drought last year. I would wait until fall. They can be difficult to find but Louisiana Nursery sometimes has them or some of the nurseries in Folsom or Forest Hill carry them for much cheaper.
