Thanks for the post.

last year i had one done and i believe it was something like $3-$5 per yard on top of the price of dirt. I know thats a big range, cant rememeber exactly which it was.

I'm guessing they aren't working the dirt for that price. a few years ago I paid for 240 yards for my pad. It's in Baton Rouge so I had to pay more for the dirt than if it would have been near a dirt pit.

$2 yard dirt
$7 yard for delivery
$2 yard for leveling it and compacting it.
Total was $11/yard x 240= $2640.

I paid a separate company for compaction testing and it passed easily.

I'm doing math on the fly here adding 30% for compaction you'd need about 320 yards. (260 yards to raise the main portion 36", 60 yards to raise the smaller portion 12")

Usually the person working the dirt can have it delivered and they make a few bucks. If you have one person delivering it at a discount for you, someone is going to charge full price for that pad prep. In other words, my dirt guy wasn't going to prep my pad for $480 b/c he spread and compacted the dirt after every load like it should be done. But he did over a couple days as he made money on the dirt and dirt work.

I can get dirt for $100 per 14 cubic yards.

Where from? That’s a good price for right now. Best I usually find is $9-10/yd delivered.

In general, a house pad is just dirt and dozer time. Assuming no trees or other prep work needs to be done. Figure volume of pad + 10% for slope + 20% for compaction for amount of dirt needed. Then around $1000-1500/day for the dozer time.

ETA: For dirt volume, don’t forget they’ll have to muck at least 6” from the existing top soil. Hopefully there’s no water issues or vegetation as that just adds time and fill.

What kinda sucks is the dozer is going to work about 2x as fast as the trucks. So half the dozer time will be idle. If you have other work to do on the property, you can usually get a little of that done too (tree removal, clearing, etc).

Compaction should be done by a fully loaded truck, so that should also factor into the time. The compaction test should be done on each lift as well.

Great question and timing. Currently just finished clearing house pad area and awaiting engineering portion of my plans. Definitely following as well. Framing and wind engineering …don’t think I would need both but it’s pricey

Just paid $8k for the wood for forms and $7k for dirt, making forms, and compaction on slab 2 weeks ago on a ~4200 sqft slab. I think we went up in elevation about 2-2.5 feet. Should be pouring slab next week. Hope that helps.
