Buying a new house and for some idiotic reason the builder didn't put cabinets in the oversized laundry room. Does anyone know what I should expect to pay to put in 3 or 4 cabinets above the washer and dryer?

If you are handy, maybe $200 for the cabinets and $50 in paint and materials. If you aren't, all that plus about $300-$400.

I am pretty handy when it comes to maintenance stuff, but where would I buy cabinets myself?

Lowe's? Specialty stores?

Yeah, OP didn't give a budget so that's the low-end.

If you can put some screws in probably $200 or less. Depending on what type of cabinets you can find.
Also, not that you may want them but some of Habitat for Humanity stores have used Cabinets in good condition.

Go to Home Depot and get their Hampton Bay shaker cabinet. It’ll be about 130 for a 30x30 wall cabinet. Washer and dryer is about 30 inches each so 2 of these will be 260 total, maybe 300 if you choose a 30x36 vs the 30x30. A stud finder, level, and a 2x4 to set the cabinets on when installing and you’re good to go. Should take less than an hour.

This^^

I was in the same boat. Laundry room had no storage. I went and bought (2) 24” cabinets from Home Depot, set a 1x2 into the studs, screwed the cabinets into the studs as they say on top of the 1x2 and I was pleasantly surprised how good it looks. All in all it probably cost me $200 because I already had the wood and screws. No paint needed as I went with the already assembled white ones.

Call local professionals and get 3 quotes. Then go shop cabinet prices at Lowes & HD. Install yourself and see how much $$$ you just saved. Watch several YT videos and this is an easy DIY project

exactly this. We just did the same thing and I picked up 2 of the 30x30 Hampton Bay shaker cabinets in white. Came to roughly $260.

I already had what I needed to install them (cabinet screws, level, and stud finder. I didn’t use a ledger board... just found the studs and measured/pre-drilled the screws in the cabinet.

Once I lifted it into place, I had my wife drive the first screw into the stud. I took it from there, leveled it and drove the rest of the screws in. For the 2nd cabinet, just butt it up against the first and have your wife drive that first screw in. It took about an hour total to include measuring.

Tip: when you measure where to put the screw in the cabinet, don’t forget to subtract .75”. That’s .25 for the edge that sticks out and .5” for the thickness of the side of the cabinet.
