If my Yard Butler is not producing consistent plugs am I doing more harm than good?

I've heard one side say that if the tines don't produce plugs you're just adding to the compaction problem.

Another argument is that if you can drive the tines down then you don't have compacted soil in the first place and what you're doing can be considered routine aeration.

FWIW, I will clean out the tines and spray them with WD40 to see how that works. I would prefer to core aerate (I think)...

I have one of those, and by and large, I’ve found it’s works pretty good. I’ve also sprayed the tubes with WD40 - it helps, but the tubes still occasional plug up, requiring the tubes be manually cleared which slows the overall process.

All the literature I’ve read, is that is best to removes soil core plugs, vs punching holes in the ground. From a soil physics standpoint, it makes sense.

Rent a Ryan and knock it out in about 30 minutes. If the tines are just bouncing off the dirt then water. I've never heard the "if you pull great plugs then why are you aerating" thing. I'm sure golf courses pull great plugs but they still do it twice a year.

Yea always core aerate unless you have fully sand based soil like golf courses.

I have a similar one. Took me 3 hours to do 1,000 sqft because it kept clogging. I had to clean out the tines, dry it, and spray WD-40 every 15 minutes or so. Huge PITA but my grass looked great after

possible dumbass question, wouldn't be my first...

what's the difference between pulling plugs & poking holes? i've never aerated and the grass probably looks like it.

Pulling plugs removes material and allows for less density as the holes fill in from all sides.

Poking holes doesn't remove material so more mass in less volume.

I would almost say renting one is the best play for a tow behind unless you have plenty of storage space and don’t mind biting the bullet for a good quality one. The one they sell at Lowe’s is <$300 and reviews say it’s built cheaply.

what's one cost to rent? i looked up the one our local rental place has and it didn't have a price. If i assume it's $100 for a weekend, that's 3 uses and my purchased one is paid for. I was looking at the agrifab and have an agrifab sweeper that is good quality. also, i pullet up a video of the one my local place has (bluebird 350) and it's beating the shite out of the guy using it. i just want to make sure the tow behind one actually penetrates and pulls plugs from someone with real world use...

I have a tow behind, and it does a decent job. You have to really load up weight on it and the soil needs to be fairly soft/moist.

The plugs tend to be pretty short in comparison to a better one that you’d rent. But it does the trick and it’s worth it if you have a place to store it.

Also wouldn’t recommend pulling it with a zero turn. Either a lawn tractor or an ATV. It’s heavy and tough on the equipment.

If I had a smaller yard (<3/4 Ac), I’d likely just rent the better one.

The agrifab will have no problem pulling plugs as long as enough weight is on there. The lever to raise and lower the tines might be a pain in the arse
