Our PTO needs to purchase a new microwave for the teachers lounge at the school. Should we spend the extra money on a commercial grade?

If so, any suggestions on brand or specific specs to look for?

Thanks in advance for your response.

I had a Panasonic light-duty commercial microwave for years, essentially the same as the domestic model with a few less features and a bit cheaper, it didn't have a turn table but the solid polished stainless steel interior was much easier to clean. That's basically what you are going to get with any light-duty class commercial microwave which is perfectly fine for a teacher's lounge. Solwave, Amana, Panasonic, Galaxy...take your pick. Medium and heavy-duty units are pretty much all 208V/240V so probably won't be an option for you. You really won't be spending more, sub-$200 for a basic Galaxy to $400 for a Volrath. Don't waste $1,200 on a Viking so teachers can warm up their crappy coffees and Lean Cuisines.

I’d get the first $200 microwave you pass on the shelf and move on with life. Don’t think it’s worth worrying about.

Do what Clames suggests and don't look back. It's a microwave.

Get a shitty microwave and a really nice ice maker. That’s what we have in our lounge and we love it.
