Sprayed it on Friday. Everything else is catching hell but the poa is as green as could be. What gives?

Grassy weeds take up to 21 days to die

I sprayed that last year and had to spray my entire yard three times over a month and a half before I had the same damn results that one weed & feed application gives me. I just stick to weed and feed now. In fact, I just put it down yesterday evening ahead of this week’s rainfall forecast.

Downvote me to hell and back!

Give it 2 weeks. I didn’t see any results until about then.

Weed and feed you used doesn’t touch poa. I know you said you had good results with it but you’re the smoker that smokes for 50 years and doesn’t get cancer. You say I don’t know what everyone’s talking about, these cigs aren’t that bad.

I don’t mean that in a bad way, you just got lucky.

I sprayed MSM and Trimec last week and also not seeing a whole lot of action, even on clover and whatever other purple flower sprouted hell that came up after our big snow.

Expecting thats normal as well? It's been about 50-70 for about 2 weeks straight.

The heat likely took care of his Poa and he thought it was the weed and feed

Give it a couple more days. Trimec typically works fast but MSM is slower in cooler weather.

Took about 10 days for my application of MSM to look like it was working a couple weeks ago. But it's working great now. Took out pretty much everything bad in my yard.

Nah, I barely get any poa. My biggest problem every year is clover and dollar weed due to having lots of low areas that stay wet. Also some sticky grass in the back yard. Weed & Feed knocks that crap out quickly when the Cleggs mix took three applications and it still needed W&F. W&F is what I use every spring and it takes care of that stuff in one application. I decided to try the Cleggs mix last year to see what all the fuss was about and I was very disappointed.

By the way, for those of you who love Scotts W&F like I do, Sams in Denham has 12,000 sq ft bags for $35 a piece. I usually only buy enough for my back yard due to it being so expensive but two of the 12,000 sq ft bags from Sams was just enough to do my entire lawn for a great price.

Thanks man, I'll give it a few more days. I followed the directions to a T and went a little heavier given that I have Bermuda.

Hoping I did it correctly. Long time reader, first time user here.

Probably henbit. Mine doesn't look bad yet either. I am trying to be patient.

That's the one. I feel like such hack right now. My winter pre-em did nothing (methenamine).

Lesson learned though. Have Prodiamine going to work right now, will probably do one more at the end of March.

Good thing about a lawn is that it will be there next year and you get to try everything all over again. Every thing matters when applying these products. Mix rate, application rate, droplet size, wind speed, dry lawn, temperature, walking speed, etc. You'll get to play around with products, rates, and see what works best for you.

Hard to kill poa. I’ve given up on it. I just wait till the heat kills it

I don’t think it’s been brought up in this thread but it has in others over the past couple years, but Poa annua in many areas has become very resistant to the herbicides that have been historically very good in post-emergent controlling it - like Atrazine and Simazine. In fact I recall gamecocks22, who does this for a living stated that in South Carolina Poa is extremely resistant to post emergent herbicides. This is a major issue for not only homeowners but golf course managers, etc.

Not saying the Poa in LA is resistant, because as ronk has said it takes a few weeks to the see the effects of atrazine in killing grassy weeds - it’s very effective but works slowly to kill grassy weeds.

But it does emphasize the importance of using a pre-emergent herbicide in the fall to kill the Poa as the seeds germinate in cooler weather, and just about all articles I’ve read on controlling Poa emphasize spraying it while it is small/young and has not gone to seed for best post-emergent control. Its, possible, and probably likely, that you might require a second application of atrazine on mature Poa after a few weeks to kill it, or as stated wait until the heat of summer kills it.

You are right. Some weeds are becoming resistant. Spurge is growing a resistant branch that is causing trouble. Pre em’s are important. Reapplying is important. Rotating is important. I really only use certainty/atrazine now for rescue and poa. Hardened off and dry conditions reduce efficacy. As weird as it sounds you want you weeds to grow and you want to water them.
