My house was built in the 70s and has a large brick fireplace. We have burned some wood through it (maybe a cord total) but we have never had it cleaned in 7 years. I called up a chimney sweep place and the guy says it needs the liner replaced. So he just sent me a quote on it and he wants $12k to replace the liner. Seems ridiculous as the price is super high and the liner looked fine to me from what I could see. The job would be to knock out the old clay tile liner and replace it with a steel tube and surround it with a high temp concrete.

Has anyone replaced a liner in an old fireplace? It kinda had a scammy vibe to it but then I got the quote and laughed. The fireplace seems very solid to me.

I can recommend Basic Chimney Sweep in BR who repointed the mortar and installed a mechanical damper at the top of the flue a few years ago.
Mr. Calais is honest and does excellent work. When I called him out recently, he stated there was no need for any cleaning or additional work. Only paid for the service call

Thanks for the recommendation as I would call them but don’t live in BR/LA.

Was curious if anyone had any experience with replacing a terra-cotta liner or if I am being sold a job that isn’t necessary

No. Im not in BR/LA. But this seems to be a trend with chimney sweepers as per conversation I’ve had with others.
