Your pics inspire me every time you post them

My backyard is coming along from 100% just dirt and weeds to now looking like it at least has some grass. It's all common bermuda. My front yard I'm starting to cut lower and lower to get rid of the centipede and let the common take over there too. I still want to get my hands on some celebration, but not even sure how that would work if its common already and you introduce celebration plugs.
This is all a learning experience for me, but, as someone else said in this thread, I'm cheap so I'm taking the slow route.
It is fun to see the bermuda take over bald spots though. You don't get that type of fun with Centipede.

If you are going to go common then stay with common. If you are going to go with hybrid then stay with hybrid. Typically you hybrids (all the tifs, celebration, tahoma31) are darker in color with less spacing in the leaves. Mixing the two will be noticeable.

My mindset is "save the hybrid cultivars, celebration being one of them, for the next house."
I've enjoyed the work associated with caring for the common, and common is all this house will ever see as long as I'm living in it.
Our next house will be properly leveled and sodded from the start.
Probably with 419.
Edit: I see that Ronk agrees

My yard is not golf course level and if Bemuda looks ragged at a taller height, not sure that is the route for me.

Here’s an update on mine:
Still a long way to go, but the Bermuda continues to slowly spread. Most me the bald spots I had left over from last year have filled in with mostly Bermuda. I do have either St Aug or Sledge that pokes through my nice Bermuda patch that I need to tackle.
I did spread some 33-0-0 about 2-3 weeks back that stressed that St Aug a lot, which I suppose is what I wanted. Hopefully some good rains this week as my lawn needs it

Rain is interesting in that you can't really go wrong.
Lack of it will allow the bermuda to take over St. Aug, which requires more rain.

It was probably about 1lb per 1000, maybe a tad more

Mow often. As often as you can. If you see st Aug runners just yank them out.

I started off blanket spraying MSMA. Wanted everything gone that wasn’t Bermuda. Added a little Celsius with it. Did this in August of last year. By the end of September, I was 75% Bermuda. In October I sprayed Specticle Flo and in February, I sprayed my first of Prodiamine. Forgot to spray my second dose, but have been spot spraying Dallis and Crabgrass. Everything has filled in nicely and I’m now 100% Bermuda except where the live oaks are.
I fertilize once every two weeks with 46-0-0 in a spray solution at 1pound for every 2k sq ft. Cut every 2/3 days and spot spray every other weekend that I don’t fertilize. Cutting with a reel mower makes a HUGE difference!!
Forgot to add, I haven’t started using a PGR yet but will next year. I am also constantly fixing low spots/washout spots on side of house pad. Sand leveling and core aerating as well next year!!

I fear how good my Bermuda would look if reel mowed. What did you start off with again? A California?
Is it easy to learn?
I’m intrigued by those Yard Force electrics on Amazon. Just $150

We're going to need to see pics. I'm trying to avoid MSMA myself, but I have dallisgrass bad. I've been spot spraying it with roundup since bermuda is so agressive I feel like it'll fill in the dead spots relatively quickly. Doing that with Centipede and you'd have dead spots for 2 years unless you just re-sod.

Have you considered digging it up, filling with a bag of sand, and sprigging?
Sprigging works really well if you just keep a bit of water on it.
Draw a line in the sand with a screw driver or similar object, place the bermuda stolon in the line, a put some organic material on top or just keep it in place with more sand.

Oh no it's all over the yard. My front yard I dug most of it up with a fiskars weed puller, but they are mature and the root system is intense and even some of it has grown back because you miss one piece and it'll just take back over. Also, it grabs so much soil you end up with big holes. Besides all of that, I just had/have so much that it takes a lot of time.

If it were me I'd grab a shovel and 5-10 bags of sand and totally eradicate it in 45 minutes, though I could be understating the problem.
Here's a sprigging example after just 12 days.
I let my runners run over the bricks into the driveway for this very reason.
You can also grab them from a public park or a neighbor's yard.

I have the Fiskars staysharp 18 max human powered. It’s in the top two best manual reels but not perfect.
Couple complaints:
-Leaves seed heads on common Bermuda at 1.5”, need to go down to 1” for clean cut on common which is where you want to be anyway.
-1” is lowest setting. 3/4” would be desirable for hybrids.
-going from a thick 2” to 1.5” isn’t crazy bad but going from a thick 1.5” to 1” will almost kill me and is barely possible. Maybe quarter inch adjustments would help with this but it only does halves.
-adjusts all the way up to 4” when it is almost completely useless at any setting above 2.5”.
-if biting off more than it can chew, it will start to pull and leave ripples. Maybe I need to sharpen.

you should get yourself one of these bad boys

The area I rob the plugs from is usually filled back in within a week. I usually put a plug in every dog pee spot and it's filled back in 2 weeks or so later if I keep it watered.

I bought one last year, and had some good success taking common from other areas (with permission). I have just been hesitant to mess up the best parts of the lawn given that I am fairly pleased with the rate of expansion.
Nitrogen and water have been my main tools this year.

Got one of these a few weeks ago and it is awesome. I just don't have any areas thick enough to steal from yet. But I was going to try to take some plugs and put around my patio where its just bare right now.

Did the same thing at my MIL house. She was scraping Bermuda grass from a crack in her cement. I took it and planted it and filled in a spot.
