I have come home to find a bunch of caterpillars eating the shite out of my Meyer Lemon tree. I have identified the caterpillars as the orange dog caterpillars, which turn into the giant swallowtail butterflies.

What would you do?

Unless it's a small tree, let them be.

Leave them alone. Butterflies will be awesome and the leaves will come back and not affect the lemon production.

I asked the same question earlier this year. The bare branches are already sprouting out more leaves.

My big problem is the whiteflies.

Well, it is a very small tree in a pot. It has about 4 caterpillars on it and they will eat every leaf off of it. Regardless, I think I will chance it and hope they turn into butterflies before winter.

I think I've tried that. I've put spinosad, permethrin, and malathion on them with no luck. The trees have all that black crud all over them and I'm scrubbing off the satsumas in the sink so they ain't ugly

Leave them be if it isn't a very small tree. Swallowtails are awesome

Since it is small, just net the tree. You can buy the tree netting on Amazon. Search insect netting for trees. Once it gets bigger/more mature the tree will handle the damage just fine.
