I've gotten about 20 cucumbers in two weeks. The greater majority of them are crunchy and sweet, perfectly delicious. Every now and then one will taste very bitter. Please explain whats happening. Is there something I can do to ensure they ALL taste good?

heat stress usually causes the chemical that makes them bitter, and it usually varies plant to plant and vine to vine. There’s not much you can do in the garden.

in the kitchen, there’s a few ways to tame the bitter namely salting and peeling

Ah, this is probably the problem. I have not only different varieties planted together in an above ground box but there are 6 or more individual plants.

Elaborate please. and thank you.

peeling is self explanatory
with a really bitter one, slice or dice and put in a colander toss with salt and let drain in the sink. After an hour or so, rinse and eat

They also tend to get bitter if left on the vine too long.

I always have some that get lost in the foliage and they turn bitter if left on too long.

This, pick early and often with cucumbers

Yep, and my same motto with okra. They stay on the plant too long and they get woody and not good for anything but to let dry and collect the seeds to plant the next season.

Did your peel have any yellowish color to it or was it a deep cucumber green from end to end ? Likewise , was the seed gel in the middle plump and juicy, or thin /on the dry side?
