Well, we knew this day would come. The Maytag washer/dryer combo that the wife and I purchased the day after we got married for $750 for the pair back in 1992 is on the verge of giving up the ghost. Specifically, the transmission on the washer seems to be going out. They stopped making the replacement for that one during Covid.

Went back to the place we bought it and that has serviced all our appliances if needed since, Richard Hebert Appliances (used to be Richard Hebert Maytag) in Lafayette. I had a Speed Queen in mind though my wife initially balked at the price she decided reliability wash what she most wanted (that Maytag set spoiled us).

Had my eye on the TR7 washer & DR7 dryer but the salesman told me point-blank that he would be replacing the control board on it within 2-4 months and recommended the TC5/DC5 combo saying they have had to do only a few warranty repairs on those ever. They should be in later this week and I'll officially be in the speed queen club

I’m rolling with the 7’s for about three years with no problems. The 5’s are fine and are a solid purchase for sure.

Man, I'm not looking forward to the day I have to replace ours. We have the old school dial with no electronics. Seems like everybody we know complains about the new machines within the last 15 yrs.

With new technology comes new problems. NASA's space shuttle was technologically less powerful than an Xbox 360 (this was over a decade ago), but they never changed anything on the shuttle because they knew it worked. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind. All electronics erase older problems, but will create new ones.

From what I understand, Speed Queens are still super mechanical without all of the upgraded parts you're used to seeing in newer W/D units and is what makes them popular amongst the H&G board.

you would have made a better investment if you had your old machines gone over top yo bottom and replaced all the moving parts.

those old ones will outlast the one you just bought, as well as the one you have to replace it with in 5 years or less.

Good luck. After a nightmare stretch with Samsung washer and dryer, we ponied up for Speed Queen all mechanical. They are top notch units, but even the best manufacturers have issues. We had our washer and dryer serviced under warranty......and just after our warranty expired, my dryer needs a new timer. Well, not under warranty, you can't get the part. Part has been on backorder since Feebruary. Called Speed Queen a dozen times with the same bullshite story that they will come in stock later in the month.

5 year old, $1000 dryer that doesn't work. Me not a Speed Queen fan. I think its probably best to just buy the cheapest shite possible, get extended warranty and throw them away when they break. Give me back my 1990 washer/dryer combo. Bitch prolly still going strong.

One of my biggest pet peeves is the reliability of modern appliances. The companies design the shite to break so you have to buy new ones. I'm convinced that is the way the make things now a days.
