You would think with a water heater in the attic, you could find a faucet on a lower level to drain it so you didn't need to even use the drain valve on the tank until it was already mostly empty.

LOL - that would be to easy. But I suspect 99% of the population don’t realize that water heaters should be maintained - changing anodes, drain to remove sediment - on a routine basis - hell I didn’t know this until about 7 years ago, when I starting subscribing to Family Handyman magazine, and the magazine had an article on this which of course made perfect sense after reading it.

Because that would require me to have four additional 40 amp double pole breakers, which I have no room for.

So all electric house?

State is a good brand most plumbing supply houses sell.

That isn't how that works.....

That will drain the hot water line attached to the heater which is fine. The water is still in the tank.
Turn off the cold water going into the tank.
Connect your hose to the drain and open the prv and this will allow air into the tank to drain it down.

I would advise moving heaters to a garage with easy access or lack of destruction is something goes wrong.
This also takes it from being a 2 man project to a 1 man project.

Rheem, State and AO Smith are three of the better. My plumber only uses Navion tankless heaters.
